NERVOUS
SYSTEM
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE
PICTURE
NERVOUS SYSTEM

Our Nervous System connects all your body parts and transmits
signals one part to another.
Our nervous system is like a computer, were our brain is the software
and is responsible for making decisions and the nerves are like the
hardware or wiring that communicates those decisions with the rest of
the body
WHAT NERVOUS SYSTEMS DO

 Our nervous system controls the ability to move, breathe,

see, hear, think and more..
WHAT ARE THE TWO MAIN DIVISION OF NERVOUS SYSTEM

 Central Nervous System

 Peripheral nervous System
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Brain

 The CNS serves as the main

processing center of the entire
nervous system. Spinal Cord
 It consist of two main components.
BRAIN

 This is an organ located within the

skull that functions as organizer and
distributer of information for the
body.
Large upper part of the brain that controls activity
CEREBRUM
and thought.

CEREBELLUM Also know as “Little brain”
Which is responsible for the smooth and coordinated body movements

SPINAL CORD

 This serves as a channel for signals

between the brain and the rest of the
body and controls simple
musculoskeletal reflexes without
input from the brain.
PERIPHERAL
NERVOUS SYSTEM

 The PNS connects the central

nervous system to organs and limbs.
 It has two main divisions:
TWO DIVISIONS OF PERIPHERAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM

 Somatic Nervous System

 Autonomic Nervous System
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

 This system is associated

with voluntary control of
body movements.
 Who can give an example of voluntary movement?
TWO MAIN PARTS OF
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Spinal nerves Cranial nerves

 The nerves that carry motor  The nerve fibers that carry
and sensory signal between information into and out of
spinal cord and the body the brain.
 There are 31 pairs of spinal  There 12 pairs of cranial
nerves which supply the nerves that are associated
communication links between with motor and sensory
the central nervous system functions.
and the neck, trunk, arms and
legs.
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS
SYSTEM

 This system is associated

with Involuntary control of
body movements.
 Who can give an example of involuntary movement in
our body?
TWO MAIN DIVISIONS OF
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS
SYSTEM
Sympathetic Parasympathetic

 It is activated when the body is  It maintains body functions and

in dynamic role or stress. restores the body to normal or
relaxed mode.
 Also describe as fight or flight.  Also describe as rest and digest.

frightening.  Basically, it undoes the work of
sympathetic division after a
stressful situation.
