Why is the sea

salty?
Week 15, Lesson 27 & 28
Words to learn
Dissolve:When a solid is
mixed into a liquid,
creating a solution (liquid).
Mixing salt into water is an
example. Upon
evaporation, the dissolved
parts usually come out of
solution and reform the
solid.

Words to learn
Predict: A prediction is
made about the outcome
of a future event based
upon a pattern of
evidence. Students might
predict that a seed will
sprout based on their past
experiences with plants or
that it will rain tomorrow
based on today's weather.

Words to learn
Fair: It is important for an
experiment to be a fair test.
You conduct a fair test by
making sure that you change
one factor at a time while
keeping all other conditions the
same. For example, in the toy
cars and ramps example, the
car should be released from the
same place on each ramp, the
car should not be pushed down
the ramp, etc.

How rock salt is formed
Millions of years ago, a shallow sea covered much of North America. Salt w
ater trapped in basins evaporated over time, leaving behind saltdeposits.

Reefs capture water in a shallow basin.

Warm temperatures and sunlight cause water to evaporate.

The remaining water becomes oversaturated with salt. Salt precipitates, or deposits in a solid form, at the bottom of the sea.

More seawater flows into the basin, starting the process again.
