Comment on the 3 role plays


Lee Canter and Marlene Canter are the people who proposed assertive discipline model. They believe that, both pupils and teachers have right in the

classroom. Therefore, in using, model of assertive discipline, teacher can establish a democratic classroom. First and foremost, the first role play is about a new teacher enter the naughtiest class in the school. Once, she entered the class, she told the pupil the rules in her class. Although the pupils in the class seemed like could not care less of what she was talking about, she never scold them. Instead of scolding the pupils, she would rather call upon the pupil name and she explained about the rule. In my opinion, this kind of teacher believed that, scolding will bring no benefit to the teacher and pupils. Thus, assertive teacher will always maintain calm in order to manage the behaviour of the pupils. Next, the second role play is about non-assertive teacher. This teacher failed to make the pupils follow the desired behaviour. Apart from that, this teacher is not consistent and not firm. For instance, Puan Syahida, always give Shamala chance to improve herself. In fact, Shamala believe that, by asking for forgiveness everytime the teacher scold her, the teacher will always give her chance. This shows that, Puan Syahida never is non-assertive teacher. She is not firm and not consistent. Therefore, as a teacher to be, we should never practise non-assertive teacher in the class. Last but not least, aggressive teacher is more autocratic. She demonstrates the power and intolerance. For example, Puan Ain showed her tolerance when she did not allowed her pupil to go to the toilet. Other than that, she used short and precise instruction but in a firm and vivid intonation. Hence, pupils will hate this kind of teacher the most. All in all, as a teacher to be, we should already think of what kind of teacher we want to be. I think I would like to be an assertive teacher. So, the pupils will always work together with me in establishing an effective and conducive classroom.
