#16 Lewis and Clark/Sacajawea

They were originally employed by Thomas Jefferson who intend for them to go on a secret mission to the area later involved in the Louisiana Purchase to map out the area. However, the land was unexpectedly gained in the purchase of New Orleans. The expedition of Lewis and Clark became more famous. The expedition began in Saint Louis, Missouri. They travelled along the Missouri River where they encountered several different Native American tribes. One of the tribes thought the slave who accompanied them what quite a marvel and they thought he was a bear. They nicknamed him black medicine. They desired for him to mate with their women in order to breed a stronger race. They met with Sacajawea along their travels. She was a Native American who viewed their expedition as non-violent and decided to become their guide. During the expedition, only one man died. They were welcomed back as American heroes.
