    The United States went to war with Mexico after attempting to purchase Texas, which Mexico claimed as its territory. When American troops entered Texas, they were fired upon by Mexican forces, starting the Mexican-American War. Though Mexico had one early victory, the US ultimately prevailed and gained the western territories of California, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, fulfilling America's Manifest Destiny of expanding from coast to coast.

    #24 The Mexican/American War

    In its expansion westward America decided to buy Texas from the Mexicans. However, the Mexicans were reluctant to sell, therefore, the Americans marched troops in to Texas to take the land from the Mexicans. This militia was fired upon which began the Mexican American war. During the war the Mexicans only had one major victory on their side. The war was ended by the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty stated that America would pay a pre-determined amount and in return they would gain California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona as well as many of the other western territories. This completed the manifest destiny in which America was finally expanded from coast to coast.
