#26 Robert E. Lee and U.S.

Grant

Robert E. Lee was born in Virginia and was a Colonel in the military before the Civil War. He led a group of Marines to put down John Browns rebellion. He was a well respected officer in the American Civil War. His men referred to him as Uncle Bobby. Though he did not agree with slavery, he joined the confederacy due to a sense of loyalty to his home state of Virginia. A brilliant strategist, he became a General in the Confederacy and was in charge of such battles as Gettysburg. Ulysses S. Grant was chosen to the General of the Union Army by President Abraham Lincoln. Unlike Robert E. Lee, Grant was uncivilized. However, he was a brilliant tactician. After the Civil War, Grant became the president of the United States.
