#23 Fredrick Douglass

Fredrick Douglass was an Abolitionist who was born a slave. He was taught how to read by his masters wife. He loved to read because he believed it was the ticket to freedom. Borrowing an identity from another black man, he managed to escape and take a train to the Free states. He openly spoke out against slavery in the north and northern abolitionist delighted in having him because of his experiences as a slave and his influence. He spoke on behalf of womens rights. He was the first black man to be nominated of the office of Vice President of the United States. He wrote several autobiographies about his experiences as a slave.
