Work and Machines

What is Work?
Chapter 5 Section 1
The Meaning of Work
 Work- a force is exerted on an object that sets
the object in motion.
 In order for you to do work on an object, the
object must move some distance as a result
of your force
 The force you exert must be in the same
direction as the object’s motion
 Work is most efficient when you exert a force
in the direction of the object’s motion
Calculating Work
 Amount of work done on an object depends on
the amount of force exerted and the
distance the object moves
 Work = Force x Distance

 Joule (J) = Newtons x meters (work)

 100 Joules = 100 N x 1 m

 200 J = 100 N x 2 m
