Carrousel Mathematics 514: Chapter 6

Introduction
This document is a tool designed to help give teachers a clear description of what should be
covered in Chapter 6 of the Carrousel Mathematics 514 textbook. The textbook offers more
material than can be covered in most regular classes. However, this summary should be seen
as a guide only; the amount of time available as well as the students' interests and
capabilities will determine the material which is covered. Further information about the
material is found in the Teacher's Guide.

Objectives Covered in Chapter 6

This chapter covers Terminal Objective 3.2: To solve problems using the concept of probability
in a geometric context. Students will be able to determine probabilities in situations where an
event is a set of points in a region of a plane.

It is important to refer to the MEQ Curriculum document for more details on the
objectives of the program (pp. 30 - 31).

Time 8% of the year.

Comments
1. This topic provides students with additional opportunities to develop the fundamental
skill of modelling a complex situation to aid in the analysis and solving of a problem.

2. This topic provides an excellent opportunity for making links between the concepts they
have studied in geometry and probability theory.

3. Prior knowledge:
i) In Secondary I to IV, students established relationships between the dimensions of
certain figures and their perimeters, areas or volumes.
ii) In Secondary II, students calculated the probability of an event during a random
experiment.

4. This topic can be linked to linear programming covered in Math 514.

5. Technology facilitates the simulation of experiments and the creation of geometric

models.
