Ninoy Aquino Day is a national non-working holiday in the Philippines observed

annually on August 21, commemorating the assassination of former Senator Benigno "Ninoy"
Aquino, Jr. He was the husband of Corazon Aquino, who was later became Philippine
President; they are treated as two of the heroes of democracy in the country. His
assassination led to the downfall of Ferdinand Marcos on February 25, 1986, through
the People Power Revolution. In 2004, the commemoration ceremony for the holiday was
held and events were attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Fidel V. Ramos.

In celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day, as an Araling Panlipunan teacher I assigned pupils

to bring picture of Ninoy Aquino for them to familiarize. I discussed brief information of the
said person and also inculcate to the minds of my pupils what are the heroic deeds of Ninoy
Aquino to our country.

National Heroes Day was first celebrated during the American Colonial Period. The first
instance of it being signed into law was on October 28, 1931, when Philippine Legislature
signed Act No. 3827, making every last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. This is the
one day in the year where we get to celebrate all of the country’s heroes (and there have
been many of them throughout the years). It has seen many changes in the country’s history,
but the thought behind it remains the same: to honor ALL of our heroes, and not just the
select few. Today, it is celebrated during the last Monday of August thanks to Republic Act
No. 9492, signed by former President and current Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
This made a lot of employees happy, as it, in their minds, would not make holidays like
National Heroes Day pointless from a vacationer’s perspective.

In celebration of National Heroes Day, as an Araling Panlipunan teacher I assigned

pupils to bring pictures of their favorite heroes. I introduce some of heroes’ names and their
brief information. I inculcate to the minds of my pupils how val uable all the sacrifices
and the heroic deeds of Filipino heroes then to acquire freedom.
