Beginning

Activity 1 – Flashing a card, vocabulary review (5 mins)

T divides Ps into two groups.

P whose turn it is tells what is on the flashcard.
The same is repeated with the text cards.

Activity 2 – Listen and say Parrot or Penguin. Listen and repeat. (8 mins)
SB, pg. 32, ex. 2
CD 2.6 – 2.7
Ps open their SBs on pg. 32.
T focuses their attention on the pictures in exercise 2.
T asks: “What two animals can you see?” “What is this and what is this?” (T points to the parrot
and the penguin on the first picture.) Ps answer.
T asks Ps what each bird can or cannot do. “Can the parrot fly?” “Can the penguin swim?” Other
possibilities are: climb a tree, run, etc.
T explains to Ps that now they are going to listen to the CD and say whether the sentence is about
a parrot or a penguin.
T plays the CD, pausing after each line for Ps to answer.
T plays the CD again, pausing for Ps to repeat, first chorally, then individually.
Individual Ps say sentences about one of the birds. Other Ps say whether the sentence is true for a
parrot or a penguin.

Activity 3 – Listen and circle (5 mins)

AB, pg. 35, ex. 1
CD 2.8
Ps look at the pictures and say what animals they can see.
T plays the first item on the recording and asks Ps to point to the correct animal.
T plays the recording, pausing after each item and asking Ps to circle the correct animal.
We check the answers together. Ps say the correct word for the picture they’ve circled.
As: 1 bat 2 parrot 3 dolphin 4 penguin 5 monkey 6 giraffe 7 lion 8 crocodile
Activity 4 – Choose an animal. Ask and answer (5 mins)
AB, pg. 35, ex. 2
T asks Ps to look at the picture and name the animals.
T explains that the pupils have to ask and answer questions about animals.
Two Ps read out the example dialogue.
T asks Ps to suggest some more questions for each animal, e.g., Can it swim/run/talk?
T chooses an animal and Ps ask questions until they guess T’s animal.
Ps play the game in pairs.

Activity 5 – Listen and sing, read (8 mins)

SB, pg. 33
CD 2.10
T and Ps look at the pictures.
T explains that the animals are playing a game. They have to copy the actions of the leader. The
monkey is the leader.
T explains that Ps are going to learn a song about playing together and that on the last line of the
song a different child becomes the “monkey” and leads the actions.
T plays the song and Ps do the actions.
Reading: Each P reads the song out loud.

Activity 6 – Write. Listen and check (8 mins)

AB, pg. 36, ex. 3
CD 2.9
T looks at the pictures of the animals with Ps.
T asks Ps to suggest some sentences for each one: What can a monkey do? Yes. It can climb…
T tells Ps to read the sentences in the word bank and choose four for each animal.
Ps listen to the recording and check their answers.
As: 2 It’s brown. It can fly. It can’t run. It’s a bat. 3 It’s grey and white. It can swim. It can’t
climb. It’s a dolphin.
