BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY
Balaji's share of the local potato and vegetable chips market grew to
13.7% in 2012, from 9.5% in 2008, according to
Euromonitor. Balaji also dominates in the western market with a
share of 71%. In its home state Gujarat, it has a share of 90%.
Economic Times recognized Balaji Wafers as 'Sultan of Wafers'.
Madison Media won the media duties worth Rs.20 Crore of the well-
known snacks brand, Balaji Wafers.The company’s media account
was put up for a multi-agency pitch for the first time ever. Balaji
Snacks and Namkeen will focus essentially on the print
advertising. Mardisson Media has been winning the media duties
back to back as a few days earlier it had won the media and digital
mandate worth Rs 500crore of the health and beauty giant, Marico.
Balaji Wafers and Namkeen is a household name especially in
Gujarat for its potato chips and variety of other savouries. The
company started by Virani brothers back in 1974 currently holds for
70% share in the market of snacks
HISTORY OF ORGANISATION
MAIN ACHIVEMENTS
Balaji company started in 1976 by the members of Virani Group,
when Chandubhai and his brothers Bhikhubhai and Kanubhai
migrated from a small village Dhun Dhoraji, Jamnagar district of
Gujarat. Their father Popatbhai Virani was a farmer, who sold
ancestral agriculture land and gave Rs. 20,000 to them to venture
into business.
The Viranis invested in farm equipment, but could not succeed and
lost the money. Kakubhai and his brothers started a wafer business
from a canteen of a cinema hall in Rajkot in 1974. Until 1989, the
wafers were produced at the Virani's house and distributed in and
around Rajkot city. Supplying wafers and namkeen of local brands
to the patrons of astron cinema, Rajkot due to the short supply of
that product hey decided to make their own products line in year
1982.
ADVANTAGES:
Member's liability is restricted to the amount of shares they
own. They have limited liability.
Additional capital can easily be raised by selling shares.
The company can continue to trade even if one of its
member’s dies.
Shares can be bought and sold with director's approval.
It has a separate legal existence from that of its owners. It can
own property and sue and be sued.
This type of organization has a much higher business status
than a sole trader.
DISADVANTAGES:
They can audit annual returns and accounts have can be made
to the Registrar of Companies. All these documents are
available for public inspection.
This private limited company id more expensive and time
consuming to set up than a sole trader or partnership.
They need professional help will be needed to set up a private
limited company.
There is separation of ownership and control which means that
the owners no longer make all the decisions.
They have limited opportunities for economies of scale.

1 GRADER: To segregate potatoes in terms of their size.
2 PEELAR: To peel out the skin of potatoes.
3 SLICERS: To slice those potatoes for wafers.
4 WASHERS: To wash the slices of potatoes for cleaning starch.
5 FRYERS: For frying the wafers and getting it ready.
6 SORTER: For checking fried wafers and removing extra fried
wafer.
7 MIXER: For adding of flavors to wafers.
8 PACKING: Here the wafers get packed into required size packs
Via packing machines.
PLANT & TECHNOLOGY
BALAJI WAFERS PVT LTD uses mainly a semi automated
technology for their better and fast production. So that they can
reach to their customers as early as possible and can also fulfill
their demands easily. Balaji Wafers is constantly striving to upgrade
its technological strengths with latest machinery and processes.
The aim is to manufacture the best possible product, with an eye
towards “green” practices and smoother work systems for the staff.
The company was among the first to install a fully automated plant
in Gujarat.
PLANT LAYOUT
The layout used by Balaji wafers is process layout because the
production of wafers is done here step by step and in process also.
First the potatoes are checked and divided in size by size, then they
are washed, cleaned & peeled off, after this the grinder makes slices
of potatoes and then they go in to fryer and finally they get flavored
and are packed.
MEASURES TAKEN TO CONTROL POLLUTION
Air Pollution Control
There will not be any process emission except tail gas, which will be
emitted after proper burning/incineration in proposed tail gas
treatment plant. After expansion, it will be modifying along with
process plant. The tail San Envirotech Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad EIA
report of Balaji Formalin Pvt. Ltd. 2-17 gas treatment plant will be
adequate to reduce the pollution of formaldehyde, methanol and
methane to atmosphere. There will also be recycling of combustion
heat which is very effective to reduce pollution discharge and take
advantage of wasted energy. The flue gas emission from D. G. set will
be well within gaseous emission norms and there is no need of any
air pollution control measures. Adequate stack height will be
provided to control & disperse the air pollutants within the
satisfactory levels and facility for sampling such as ladder and
sampling point will be provided as per the GPCB guidelines. The
details of the flue gas stacks and process gas stacks are given in.
Water pollution
The company uses the wasted water in garden and also for the
farms in their area of the factory also. The unit has provided Rain
water harvesting system within the plant, for capacity of 100 Kl
underground tank. During the rainy days, they will first use rain
water for process and utilities and only balance water use form
ground water source. Further, unit is using this water for
manufacturing process. So by this we can say that the company’s
wastage of water is very less.
AREA OF FACTORY
Balaji is the biggest wafer plant of India. The Balaji plant
cover over 914932.39 sq. feet area (21.0039575298 acres) in
out course of Rajkot city. Balaji group has 90% share of
wafers market and 70% share of namkeen market in Gujarat.
This plant is not only in Rajkot it is situated in Rajasthan,
Madhya Pradesh, and Goa. Balaji wafers have freeze their legs
in wafer making across the whole country .

Balaji Wafers Private Limited is a Non-govt company,
incorporated on 22 Sep, 1995. It's a private unlisted company and is
classified as 'company limited by shares'.
Company's authorized capital stands at Rs 5500.0 lakhs and
has 96.18873% paid-up capital which is Rs 5290.38 lakhs. Balaji
Wafers Private Limited last annual general meet (AGM) happened on
30 Sep, 2017. The company last updated its financials on 31 Mar,
2017 as per Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
Balaji Wafers Private Limited is majorly in Manufacturing
(Food stuffs) business from last 25 years and currently, company

Balaji Wafers clocked a turnover of around Rs 1200 crore during
2016-17 and is eying a turnover of Rs 1500 crore for the current
fiscal. According to market sources the valuation of the company is
around Rs 4,000 crore.
PROFIT
The latest recorded profit of Balaji Wafers PVT LTD is around RS
51.6 crore and is said that the profit is of 10-12 % of their operating
revenue of the company.

Balaji do not advertise its products nor run any retail schemes or
promotions to sell their products. Instead of misspending on
superficial aspects like packaging and design which does not
really benefit either the company or the consumer, Balaji believes
in investing on ensuring that fresh and quality products reach the
market.
Balaji does not use artificial flavor’s in its snacks and prefers to
use local spices which give a made-at-home taste to its snacks.

mix. It may be defined as the means through which things move from
the producers or manufactures to the ultimate consumers.

The employee can also be dismissed for his fault. It the employee
opposes any rule then company either punishes or dismisses him.
“The Valsad unit that produces potato chips at present would also
manufacture snack products with capacity of almost 12 tonnes an
hour, which would take the production capacity of the plant to 24
tonnes an hour. The company aims to invest Rs 50 crore for
capacity expansion,” added Virani.
“To launch corn chips and other products the company needs to
upgrade its packaging unit. The company would set up the new
packaging facility with investment to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore.
Besides, the company has also invested Rs 5 crore to set up a food
laboratory for product testing,” said Virani. He added that such a
laboratory would also be set up very soon in the Valsad plant.
Talking about the bio-gas plant that would use the waste of potato
chips production facility, Virani said, “This plant would be
operational within six months. The wastage of the Valsad plant be
used to produce bio-gas. With commissioning of the plant, the
company expects to get at least 300 cubic meters gas an hour.”
