"ФАЛЬШИВІ ДРУЗІ" ПЕРЕКЛАДАЧА
1. Інтернаціоналізме та псевдоінтернаціоналізми
У багатьох мовах існують слова, що мають дуже подібну (звукову)
форму і, нерідко, але зовсім необов'язково, ідентичне значення (так звані
інтернаціоналізми та псевдоінтернаціоналізми). Особливо часто вони вжи-
ваються у науково-технічній літературі, наприклад, "теорія", "метод", "ек-
сперимент", "аргумент", "дефініція" тощо. Переклад таких слів з англійської,
мови на українську може становити для перекладачів-початківців, як не
дивно, певні труднощі, оскільки їхні значення можуть бути зовсім різними,
як, наприклад, у випадку actual, що має значення не "актуальний", а
"дійсний", або correspondent, українським відповідником якого є не "ко-
респондент", а "відповідний".
З точки зору перекладу усі такі слова можна умовно поділити на З
групи: 1) справжні (або повні) інтернаціоналізми, семантичні структури яких
тотожні, наприклад, hypothesis та "гіпотеза", tendency та "тенденція"; 2)
часткові інтернаціоналізми або напівінтернаціоналізми, що мають тільки
частку тотожних значень, наприклад, thesis "теза; дисертація; шкільний твір"
і "теза" або student "студент; учень; вчений; той, хто проходить пере-
підготовку; стипендіат" та "студент"; 3) псевдоінтернаціоналізми, що не
мають подібних значень, наприклад, conductor "диригент" та "кондуктор",
audience "аудиторія" і "аудієнція". Слова першої групи не становлять не-
безпеки помилкового перекладу, але вони нечисленні, тоді як слова другої та
третьої групи, значно більш численні, можуть біти сприйняті за справжні
інтернаціоналізми і перекладені невірно (через що вони й називаються
"фальшивими друзями перекладача").
Нижче наводяться приклади справжніх інтернаціоналізмів і часткових
та повних псевдоінтернаціоналізмів та їхні українські відповідники:
1) Справжні інтернаціоналізми: norm - норма, paradox - парадокс, auto-
matic - автоматичний, aspect - аспект, conceptual - концептуальний, plan -

більше два значення (зазначені перше і друге), слово unify має два основних
значення ("об'єднувати, поєднувати; зводити до єдиного, уніфікувати"), тоді
як відповідне українське слово "уніфікувати" не має першого значення
