2. Subject field words(terms): ways of interpreting them.
Terms are usually defined as monosemantic words, deprived of any expressive meaning, or even as a special quality, which words may acquire or lose in discourse. …. Thus, yield has a potentially open set of terminological meanings depending upon the subject field: доход від цінних паперів (securities markets); врожайність, врожай (agriculture); продуктивність (industry); видобуток (extraction of natural resources); вихід (processing industry); осідання, осування (mining); потужність, тротиловий еквівалент вибухівки (military sphere); здаватися у полон (military sphere); пружинити (engineering), etc, benchmark has at least a dozen recorded meanings and all meanings of table are difficult to count. Another reason is a considerable level of "jargonisation" of professional languages…. Roughly subject field words of any language maybe classified into three groups: 1) General subject field words (i.e. known to most educated speakers of the language), e.g. computer (комп'ютер); printer (принтер); account (рахунок); accountant (бу хгалтер); asets (капітали,активи,); creditor (кредитор); indicator (показник); in vestor (інвестор); civil servant (державний службовець); 2) Special subject field words (i.e. known to all people who work in a particular sector, such as computer science, banking, accounting, stock-markets, civil service, agriculture, engineering, chemistry, physics, medicine, law, education, etc), e.g. bottlenecks ("вузькі місця"); to browse web-cites ("гортати сторінки" Інтернету); folder (папка файлів у комп'ютері); provider (провайдер - постачальник послуг); accounts payable (кредиторська заборгованість); accounts receivable (дебіторська заборгованість); accounts receivable (дебіторська заборгованість); economy of scale (ефект масштабу в економіці);fiduciary (фідуціарний - заснований на довірі); party whip ("партійний батіг"- парламентський партійний організатор, який стежить за дисципліною у партійній фракції); 3) Professional jargon and slang (i.e. words known to comparatively narrow groups of professionals, often working for particular institutions or companies), e.g. to click on something ("клікнути мишею" - натиснути маніпулятор комп'ютера типу "миша"); emoticons ("смайлики" - спеціальні позначки, що свідчать про емоції користувача комп'ютерних мереж); acid-test ratio (коефіцієнт термінової ліквідності балансу, "лакмусовий папірець"); bear market ("ведмежий ринок" - ринок, де ціна на цінні папери знижується); bull market ("ринок биків" - ринок, де ціна на цінні папери зростає); "muddle through" scenario (сценарій нерішучих дій); payables (те саме, що accounts payable); receivables (те саме, що accounts receivable); to sit on the Board (входити до складу правління акціонерного товариства); high-fliers (здібні, перспективні працівники). The following recommendations for interpreters and translators can be made: 1) ….. As a rule, interpreters are not professional experts in the subject of interpreting, however most interpreters specialize in a certain area (politics, economics, finance, engineering, agriculture, computers, etc) or even in a narrow sector (banking, securities markets, corporate governance, migration issues, energy sector, environmental protection, etc). 2) … This is achieved by studying the context and the objects, notions, situations, processes (i.e. the denotata) of the subject field of translation with due regard to possible polysemy and connotation meaning of the subject field word or phrase. 3) ….. (examples below are given for the terms recorded in the dictionaries): a) practical transcription,e.g. file - файл (computers); futures - ф'ючерси (finance); manager - менеджер (management); know-how - ноу- хау (science and technology); b) transliteration,e.g. broker - брокер (securities markets); clearing - кліринг (finance); hacker-хакер (computers); barter - бартер (commerce); c) loan translation(переклад-калька), e.g. bear market-ведмежий ринок; bull market-ринок биків (securities markets); player - гравець, тобто учасник "гри" на економічному, фінансовому "полі" (economics); d) descriptive translation,e.g. benchmark (or yardstick) - база для порівняння даних, показник (economics); enforcement - втілення законодавства в життя та контроль за його дотриманням (law, politics); subsidiarity - принцип, згідно з яким вирішення господарських проблем має здійснюватися перш за все на місцевому рівні (public administration), sustainable development - сталий (усталений) розвиток (economics, environmental protection, politics).
3. Set phrases (clichés) and phraseological units (idioms): ways of interpreting them. 1. Translating the SL idiom by an identical TL idiom is, obviously, the best way out. However, the list of such direct equivalents is rather limited. The translator has a good chance of finding the appropriate TL idiom if the SL idiom, is, so to speak, international, that is, if it originated in some other language, say Latin or Greek, and was later borrowed by both SL and TL. Cf. the English "Achilles' heel" and the Russian «Ахиллесова пята». Equivalent idioms may be borrowed in more recent periods, too, e.g. "the game is not worth the candle" — игра не стоит свеч (both borrowed from French). 2. Whenever the translator fails to find an identical TL idiom he should start looking for an expression with the same figurative meaning but a different literal meaning. Cf. "to get out of bed on the wrong side" -встать с левой ноги. Here the change in the literal meaning of the idiom does not detract much from its effect. Two additional factors, however, should be taken into consideration. First, here again the translator should take care to preserve the original emotional or stylistic characteristics. So, the English "Jack of all trades" and the Russian «мастер на все руки» both refer to a person who may turn his hand to anything. However, the Russian idiom should not be used to translate the English one, as they are quite different emotionally. In English "Jack of all trades" is derogatory, for he is "master of none", while the Russian saying implies that the man can do many different things well. 3. A word-for-word translation of the SL idiom is not possible unless the Russian reader will be able to deduce its figurative meaning. Therefore a caique of the English idiom "a skeleton in the cupboard" will be counterproductive, while "to put the cart before the horse" can be well rendered as «ставить телегу впереди лошади». 4. Idiomatic analogies. he that mischief hatches mischief catches хто іншим лиха бажає, сам лихо має/хто іншим яму копає, сам у неї потрапляє; to nave the ready tongue за словом у кишеню не лізти; to keep body and sole together жити надголодь/зводити кінці з кінцями; like mistress, like maid яблуко від яблуні недалеко падає; fnere is no use crying over spilt milk що з воза впало, те пропало; beaf a dead horse товкти воду в ступі. 12. The meaning of parity In semantic structure brace includes the meaning of parity. This word is also used as a component of a quantitative attribute to defined words: a brace of hundred pounds, a brace of thousands. Word brace is used ironically in expressions: a brace of two, a brace of duke, thirty brace of grouse. The meaning of parity is worded by couple and pair. The lexeme couple belongs to the Latin words and is associated with the meaning of «yoke» and what unites the two. With the times, the word came to mean parity, cf.: a couple of girls, a couple of partners. In agricultural vocabulary brace means «sheep with a lamb». Couple is homonymous in singular and plural forms, cf.: a twenty couple of dogs, a couple of eggs, three couple of dollars. The word couple refers to objects, people and animals, The word pair is a synonym to couple and nominates a certain correspondence of denotates. Pair correlates with words nominating paired items, cf: pair of ears, pair of lips, pair of arms, pair of hands, pair of legs, pair of shoes, pair of sleeves, pair of trousers. The word pair has identical singular and plural forms. Couple indicates the number of two referring to goods, animals and people. Pair identifies a specific group, cf.: got some eggs - would you like a couple? A couple of children were playing marbles. She resolved to buy him a new pair of jeans. Students work alone or in pairs. Thus, brace, couple and pair are used in English to refer to the dual number, parity, making a set of synonyms in the hyponymic relation to Numeral two. The seme parity is restricted in its usage. Word brace is used basically to nominate two animals in question; pair and couple refer to both – animals and humans; they have a wider range of operation.
