3. ASSUMPTIONS / PROVISIONAL DATA.

3.1 For the purpose of fire case relief it has been assumed that the vessels and pipes are 'bare'
(i.e. there is no insulation).
3.2 All vessels are assumed to have 2:1 semi-ellipsoidal heads, unless otherwise stated.
3.3 A length of 5 metres has been assumed for each pipe that is connected to a vessel involved in a fire
case. This rule will be ignored only if it is obvious that the piping will not be involved in the fire.
3.4 For liquid filled vessels, the wetted surface area of a vessel, within the height range and based on
normal liquid level, has been taken for a fire case. (Section 3.15, ref 2.2).
3.5 In general, all platforms for accessing vessels are assumed to have a covered surface (instead of
mesh). This means that these platforms are capable of supporting a fire. This will give a worst case
and, hence, a conservative relief orifice sizing.
3.6 It shall be assumed that all vessels have an access platform at the base of the vessel. This means
that the flame height will start at the bottom of the vessel rather than at ground level. This will ensure
a conservative relief orifice sizing is obtained.
3.7 For larger vessels, which have more than one access platform, it will be assumed that a fire takes
place on only one of the platforms at any given time. However, it shall also be assumed that the fire
takes place on the platform that engulfs the largest vessel surface area.

7.3 Case 3 - Closed Discharge

During a closed discharge scenario, the flow of hydrocarbon liquid would need to be relieved by the
relief valve.

Maximum flow through LV-5230-1 = 15000 kg/hr [LV-5230-1, Ref 2.6]

Density = 990 kg/m3 [LV-5230-1, Ref 2.6]
Hence volumetric flow of hydrocarbon = 15.15 m3/h

Total = 15.15 m3/h

7.2.1 Calculation of Orifice Area

Now, the following equation can be used to calculate the orifice area required for liquid relief:
This equation is for a relief device requiring capacity certification.

196 .33∗Q G
A=
K d K w Kv √ P 1−P 2
[Ref 2.1, page 51]

Where,
A = Orifice area of relief device = ? mm²
Q = Volume flow of liquid = 15.1515 m³/h
G = Specific gravity of liquid at flowing temp. = 0.91
Kd = Coefficient of discharge = 0.65
Kw = Correction factor due to back pressure = 1
Kv = Viscosity correction factor = 1
P1 = Upstream relieving pressure = 1278.325 kPa(a)
P2 = Back pressure = 101.3 kPa(a)

A = 127.25 mm²
A = 1.27 cm²

NOTE: Viscosity of fluid = 0.099 cP [Ref 2.6]. This is a non-viscous fluid. Hence, Kv = 1.
