CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the procedure the researchers used in the conduct of the study. This

includes research design, research locale, research respondents, research instruments, sampling

technique, statistical tools.

Research design

This research used descriptive qualitative data method, this method is considered

appropriate since the study used standardized questionnaire in generating the data on level of the

Academic use of Mobile Phones among the students of President Garcia Memorial Institute of

Technology. The descriptive type of research emphasize objective measurements and the

statistical method mathematic or numerical analysis of data.

Research locale

This study was conducted at the school of President Garcia Memorial Institute of

Technology located at Abu Street, Poblacion, Dinas,Zamboanga del Sur. This school has typical

classrooms to use facilities, principal’s office, school canteen, gymnasium, spacious playground.
Research respondents

The respondents of this study are 60 students of President Garcia Memorial Institute of

Technology who are persuasive selected in every year level.

Research Instruments

The researchers used questionnaires guide made by the researchers to gather

information necessary for the success of the study regarding the academic use of smartphones

among the students.

Sampling technique

The researchers used purposive sampling technique; purposive sampling design was

utilized for the students as the respondents of the study. According to Calmorin et al., (1997:101)

in purposive sampling, the individual is chosen as part of the sample because of the good

evidence that it is representative of the total population.

Statistical Tools

To interpret the date effectively, the researcher will employ the following statistical treatment.

The Percentage, mean, standard deviation lastly the chi-square.

1. Percentage is used to determine the percentage usually for data on profile (e.g. level, age,
gender, etc.)
Formula:

Where: %= Perecentage

f = frequency

N = number of cases

2. Mean- is used to get average or central value (e. g level, extent , stations, etc.)
Formula:

Where : × = Mean

Σ×=∑ of all scores

N = Number of cases
3. Standard Deviation
Is a means that is used to quantify the amount of variation or dispersion of set of data values.
Formula:

Where: σ is the standard deviation

× indicates each value of the population
×shows
´ the mean of all values
N is the total number of values

4. Chi-square
a method used in statistics that calculates the difference between observed and expected data
values

Formula:

Where: f o - the observed frequency

f e -the expected frequency
