INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDE

2nd QUARTER: 3RD WEEK FOR MATHEMATICS 6

LESSON 3: KINDS OF PROPORTION
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Differentiate direct, partitive, and indirect proportions.
B. Solve word problems involving direct and partitive proportions.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Kinds of Proportion
References: Mathematics 6 (pages 145-154)
*Note: In every activity, write your answer in 1 whole sheet of pad paper or coupon bond
back to back in chronological order with solutions if necessary. Every submission just pass your
answer sheet not your book. Maintain cleanliness on your paper.

III. PROCEDURE
A. INTRODUCTION
Engage yourself to the following problem.
In the relief operations for typhoon victims, 120 families in the evacuation
center had consumed 1500 kilos of NFA rice for 3 weeks. If there were only 1000
kilos of NFA rice, how long will the families consume this volume of rice?
WHAT WILL I DO?
This problem clearly shows the relationship among the number of families,
the number of kilos of rice and the number of days to consume the rice.
From the given situation above, we can see that the more the kilos of rice
there is, the longer it will last for 120 families. This situation is an example of a
direct proportion. Thus, we have
No. of kilos of rice = no. of kilos rice
No. of weeks no. of weeks
1500 = 1000
3 n
1500n = 3000
n = 2
Therefore, 1000 kilos of NFA rice will be consumed in 2 weeks.
B. DISCUSSION
There are three kinds of proportion: direct, partitive, and indirect. In direct
proportion, as one quantity increases, the quantity increases at the same rate and
vice versa. (Refer to the examples on pages 145-146)
In a partitive proportion, a whole is divided into parts that are proportional to
the given ratio. (See examples on pages 147-148)
In an inverse or indirect proportion, one quantity increases as the other
quantity decreases at the same rate, and vice- versa. (Examples are on pages 148-
149)

C. APPLICATION
Try to answer the activity under TRY THESE on page 150.
D. GENERALIZATION
Read and understand the key words under points to ponder on page 150.
E. EVALUATION
PART I: Answer the activity on PAGE 151 under GET STARTED.
PART II: Answer letter A and B only on PAGE 151-152 under SKILL
ENHANCER.
PART III: Solve each word problem on PAGES 153-154 item 1-5 only under GO
FOR GOLD.
Chapter test: As a summary of our lesson about ratio and proportion, answer the
activity on pages 155-158. Write the letter that corresponds to your best
answer on your paper chronologically.
