Juan Gyenes (1912–1995)
Juan Gyenes (Reményi Gyenes János, John Gyenes)
(1912, Kaposvár – 1995, Madrid) szülővárosában,
Kaposvárott, 14 évesen Holzer Félix műtermében ismerte
meg a fényképezés mesterségét. Szülei válását követően,
édesapjával, Gyenes Izsó zenetanárral 1928-ban Győrbe
költözött, ahol júliusban sikeres fényképész szakvizsgát tett.
Fotósorozatain kezdetben Győr városa és számos szabadtéri
életkép szerepelt. Első fotóriporteri feladatát annak a váratlan
találkozásnak köszönhette, hogy a győri pályaudvaron fotót
készített Magyarország szépéről, Simon Böskéről, aki a
Miss Európa választásra utazott. Paál Sándor, a Színházi
Élet munkatársa felfigyelt a tehetséges fiatalra, így 1930-tól
hét évig a népszerű budapesti folyóirat laboránsa, majd
fotóriportere lett. A bécsi és budapesti színházi és zenei
világ (Bartók Béla, Kodály Zoltán, Lehár Ferenc, Toscanini,
Prokofjev) bemutatása mellett főként társasági jeleneteket
örökített meg. 1936-ban a berlini olimpiáról tudósította
a lapot. Sikeres fotóriporteri tevékenysége ellenére a
fizetésemelésre vonatkozó kéréseit nem érvényesíthette, így
Salzburg, Párizs és London érintésével európai körutat tett.
1938-40 között a The New York Times egyiptomi tudósítója
lett Kairóban. 1940-ben az Egyesült Államokba indult, de
barátai tanácsára Madridban is megszakította utazását.
A polgárháború utáni békeidőben, 1941 januárjában Pepe
Campúa újjászervezett fotóműtermében vállalt munkát. Az új,
madridi munkahely és találkozása feleségével, Sofía Vásquez
Pérezzel spanyolországi letelepedésre ösztönözte. Hét év
elteltével, 1948-ban önálló fotóstúdiót (Estudio Fotográfico
Gyenes, Madrid, Isabela la Catolica 12.) nyitott. A spanyol

Juan Gyenes (aka Reményi Gyenes János, John Gyenes)
(b. 1912, Kaposvár; d. 1995, Madrid) acquired the basics of
photography at the age of 14 in Félix Holzer’s studio in his
native city, Kaposvár. After his parents’ divorce in 1928, he
moved with his father, music teacher Izsó Gyenes to Győr,
where he successfully passed the specialist examination
in photography in July. His early series featured the city
of Győr and outdoor snapshots. His first commission as a
press photographer followed a chance encounter with Böske
“Miss Hungary” Simon, whom he photographed at the Győr
railway station while she was on her way to the “Miss Europe”
election. The talented youth was noticed by Sándor Paál,
journalist for Színházi Élet (Theatre Life). From 1930, Gyenes
worked for the popular Budapest periodical for seven years,
first as a lab technician, later as a press photographer. In
addition to presenting theatrical and musical notabilities in
Vienna and Budapest (Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Ferenc
Lehár, Toscanini, Prokofiev), he mainly recorded society
scenes. In 1936, he covered the Berlin Olympics for his
journal. Despite his successes in the press, his requests
for a salary raise were denied, so he went on a European
study tour via Salzburg, Paris, and London. Between 1938
and 1940, he worked as Egyptian correspondent for The
New York Times in Cairo. In 1940, he was planning to move
to the United States, but his friends advised him to stop at
Madrid. In January 1941, soon after the Spanish Civil War
had ended, he joined Pepe Campúa’s recently restored
studio. His new job and his meeting Sofía Vásquez Pérez, his
wife-to-be, convinced him to settle in Spain. In 1948, after

oldotta meg az arcképfotózás finom intimitást igénylő
feladatát. Világhírűvé vált fotói között megtaláljuk Francisco
Franco, és a spanyol királyi család hivatalos fényképeit,
a spanyol művészvilág (Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Montserrat
Caballé, Alicia de Larrocha) fotói mellett a hollywoodi
sztárok (Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper,
Grace Kelly) portréit. Arcképei a filatélia világában sem
ismeretlenek, Franco, János Károly, Carmen Amaya, Imelda
Marcos ismert bélyegei Gyenes fotói alapján készültek.
Népszerűségét jól mutatja, hogy világszerte több mint 1000
egyéni kiállításon mutatta be alkotásait. Fontosnak tartotta,
hogy a fotográfiára önálló művészeti ágként tekintsenek.
Életművének elismeréseként elnyerte a San Telmo Királyi
Szépművészeti Akadémia tagságát, a Katolikus Izabella Rend
Lovagja címet és a Magyar Köztársaság aranykoszorúval
díszített Csillagrendjét (1990). 2020-ben a győri Rómer Flóris
Művészeti és Történeti Múzeum Juan Gyenes művészetét
bemutató gyűjteményrésszel gazdagodott. A kollekció a
múzeum időszaki kiállításán (Esterházy-palota, 2020. 03. 12–
06. 28.) szerepel először, amely közismert és ritkán látott
alkotások, különösen gazdag fotó- és dokumentum
válogatás segítségével meséli el a 20. század jelentős
uralkodóit, politikusait, művészlegendáit megörökítő magyar
származású világhírű spanyol fotóművész Győrből induló
életművét.

another seven years, he set up his own photo studio (Estudio
Fotográfico Gyenes, Madrid, 12, Isabela la Catolica). Obtaining
Spanish citizenship, Juan Gyenes went on to cover theatrical
and social events and specialized in portrait photography.
Inspired by legendary painters such as Diego Velázquez and
Francisco de Goya, he created unique moods through the
contrasts between light and shadow, capturing the model’s
character perfectly through an intimate formal language in his
photographic portraits. Among his world-famous photographs,
we find official pictures of Francisco Franco and the Spanish
royal family, along with Spanish artists (Picasso, Miró, Dalí,
Montserrat Caballé, Alicia de Larrocha) and Hollywood
celebrities (Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper, Grace
Kelly). His portraits have found their way into the world of
philately as well: the well-known stamps bearing the profiles
of Franco, Juan Carlos, Carmen Amaya, or Imelda Marcos
were based on Gyenes’s photos. His popularity is reflected
in his more than 1000 solo exhibitions worldwide. Gyenes
stressed that photography was to be acknowledged as an art
form in its own right. In recognition of his endeavours, he was
elected member of the San Telmo Royal Academy of Fine Arts,
awarded the knighthood of the Order of Isabella the Catholic,
and the Star Order of the Republic of Hungary decorated with
a Golden Wreath (1990). In 2020, the Rómer Flóris Museum
of Art and History acquired a subcollection of artworks by
Juan Gyenes. Its items are first exhibited at a temporary show
(Esterházy Palace, 12 March to 28 June 2020) displaying well-
known as well as rare artworks including an especially rich
selection of photos and documents in an attempt to narrate
the life of a world-famous Spanish photographer whose career
started in Győr and made him a chronicler of legendary rulers,
politicians, and artists in the 20th century.
