Charles’ Law Equation

A.What’s New

Charles’ Law states that for a given

amount of gas at constant pressure, the
volume is directly proportional to the
temperature in Kelvin, V α T.
Mathematically, Charles’ Law is
Figure 2. Charles Law Equation expressed in equation form which is
shown and described in figure 2 on the
left side. The subscript of 1 refers to the initial conditions while 2 refers to the final
conditions. Temperatures should be expressed in Kelvin before substituting the
values in the equation. To apply Charles Law, convert first the temperature to
Kelvin scale by adding 273.

B.What is it
Let’s apply Charles’ Law in solving problems related to volume-
temperature relationship in gases.

Sample Problem 1:

An inflated balloon with a volume of 0.75 L at 30°C was placed inside the
freezer where the temperature is -10°C. Find out what will happen to the
volume of the balloon if the pressure remains constant.
Solution: Convert the temperature to Kelvin.
Initial Final Conditions
Conditions
V 1=0.75 L V 2=?
T 1=30 ° C=303 K T 2=10 ° C=263 K Solve for the final volume,

Conclusion: The volume decreases because the temperature decreases too. In this
case, the volume between the gas molecules decreases because the
kinetic energy is also affected by temperature.

C. Learning Activities

Activity 1: Solve it for me.

Direction: Answer the following Charles’ Law problem to facilitate mastery of

concepts on the volume-temperature relationship. Follow the steps and show your
solution. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper (5 points each)

1. A balloon was inflated to a volume of 2.5 L at 11 am when the temperature is

30°C. At 9 pm, the temperature fell to 10°C. What will be the volume of the balloon
if the pressure remains constant?

2. A sample of 50.0 L of nitrogen at 20°C is compressed to 5.0 L. What must the

new temperature (in Kelvin) be to maintain constant pressure?
