Dear Students:
Welcome to English for You. We want you to be
successful language learners, so we have prepared
many materials for you in our video sets, made by our
professional teachers with much help from their assis-
tants and the technical staff.
If you are starting with Level 2 and it is too difficult for
you, please buy the Level 1 set and start from there.
Level 2 starts with some review of the first level, so if
you are comfortable with your level during the first les-
sons, then level 2 is right for you.
There are many ways to use this set. For example, you
should listen to and watch the video, pause it if you
need to take notes, and keep going. In the Look and
Listen section you can practice by reading the sen-
tences and listening to the teacher saying them. Of
course you can practice saying them, too. In the Read
and Repeat section, you can read the sentences out
loud for your own practice. When the teacher is ask-
ing the assistants to give answers, see if you can give
the answers first and then check to see if you were
correct. Every lesson also includes a dictation, so try
to write the words and sentences correctly and then
check your work. If you didn’t do very well, try it again.
Finally, there is a reading section, so read along with
the teacher and then answer the questions. You can
say the sentences with the teacher if you like, for extra
practice.
You will also find a dictionary, a notebook full of vocab-
ulary, and the student book. The student book is for
extra practice for each lesson. There are explana-
tions of the grammar, practice exercises, some listen-
ing exercises based on the video, some guided writing,
and more reading.
We hope you will enjoy this opportunity to learn and
improve your English. We wish you all the best in your
studies.

Lesson Review

Review of be
We use the verb to be in sentences that give information.
Jerry is a doctor.
His father’s name is Bob.
They are from Chicago.
We are happy today.

Look at the chart that we saw in the first level.

The negative forms of to be are isn’t and aren’t.

We can ask questions for information by beginning the question with is or are.
Dan, are you Spanish?
Maria, are Dan and Anna your parents?

Cardinal and ordinal number review

First, let’s look at cardinal numbers again.
Paul has 9 uncles.
My grandfather is 82 years old.
She has 14 nephews.
I will buy a new doll for my cousin.
A cardinal number is a number that shows how many of something there are.
If you want to ask a question about a person’s height, you can ask, "How tall are you?"
If you want to ask a question about a person’s weight, you can ask, "How much do you weigh?"
However, be careful with that question, because people don’t like to tell their weight!

Let’s look at some more numbers.

100 = one hundred
200 = two hundred
300 = three hundred
400 = four hundred
500 = five hundred

7
LESSON 1
600 = six hundred
700 = seven hundred
800 = eight hundred
900 = nine hundred
1000 = one thousand
1,000,000 = one million

Now, let’s look at ordinal numbers.

Her birthday is on the 26th of December.
It is his first job.
Carol starts work on the 3rd of March.
Judy is her fourth child.

Ordinal numbers are numbers such as first, second and third that show the order of things.
John visited his uncle.
Then, John visited his friend.
After that, John visited the zoo.
Finally, John visited his girlfriend.

We can use ordinal numbers in these sentences.

The first thing John did was visit his uncle.
The second thing he did was visit his friend.
The third thing he did was visit the zoo.
The fourth thing he did was visit his girlfriend.

We especially use ordinal numbers in dates.

Christmas is on the 25th of December.
Christmas is on December 25th.

New Year’s Day is on the 1st of January.

New Year’s Day is on January 1st.

Here is a list of some ordinal numbers to help you:

1 = 1st (first) 6 = 6th (sixth)

2 = 2nd (second) 7 = 7th (seventh)
3 = 3rd (third) 8 = 8th (eighth)
4 = 4th (fourth) 9 = 9th (ninth)
5 = 5th (fifth) 10 = 10th (tenth)
100 = 100th (one hundredth)
200 = 200th (two hundredth)

different or irregular. Examples of these verbs are to have and to do.
