Chapter 1

Introduction

 Social media helps people to socialized with family, friends, and

acquiantances no matter where they are in the world. Users can view other
people’s post and they can react to, comment on, and/or even share their
posts. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms are
convenient for those who seek attention from other’s or want to share
their life experiences.

According to Department of Education (2019). The recent news from the

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) about
there appeal for school to stop the use of social media in giving class
projects should be fully supported by the Department of Education
(DepEd). Although, social media has its negatives too. And yes there are
common cons in social media like hackers and toxic people, but there is
another disadvantage of social media. Using it for pageants, contest, and
other events. Not all of us access to social media and some of us that do are
not as popular as other people out there. So even if you stand a chance in a
social media contenst, and if you’re not already popular, it’s an automatic
loss for you and its not good.

Our purpose of this research is to inform everyone that social media can’t
be used at all the time. You can use it whenever you are free or have spare
time in your hands.
Theoritical Framework

Base on the study of Michael Zimmer (2008). While good-faith attempts

were made to hide the identity of the institution and protect the privacy of
the data subjects, the source of the data was quickly identified, placing the
privacy of the students at risk. On the second hand Annika Andersson,
Mathias Hatakka, Åke Grönlund, Matilda Wiklund (2014). this study finds
that students as well as teachers find much of the students' social media
use distractive to learning. On the third hand Jin Mao (2014). The
affordance findings indicate that students depend on social media in their
daily lives for leisure and social connections. Educational uses by teachers
for classroom teaching and learning are sporadic, while uses by students
on their own for learning purposes seem to be abundant but also incidental
and informal.
Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 shows the things that we want to know from our respondent the main
purpose is to gather information from them like their names, age, and their
strand. In the figure 2 shows the steps that we will be taking in conducting our
research the purpose of this is to gather all the information that we need in order
for our research to be successful.

Statement of the Problem

 The purpose of the study is to answer our questions and we want to

know more about on the topic. This is the questions we want to answer
after this research.

1. What will be the good effects of prohibiting the use of social media
in schools?

2. What is the advantages of using this kind of techniques?

3. What will be the impact of this research to the students?

4. How can this law affect the teachers?

5. Doesn’t it make sense to incorporate social media use into learning

and teaching?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

 The main focus of our study is to know what will be the effects of
prohibiting the use of social media in class projects to the school system
and to the students. We want to know how will this law affect the students
because we think that the students will be the ones who will be the most
affected if this law will somehow get accepted. The only problem we
encounter when doing this research is there is no related literature because
we are the first one to do a research about this particular topic.

Significance of the Study

 This research is aim to social media. In the end of this topic, We are hoping
that this research will benefit to the other student who will try to study this
topic like related literature etc. And yes we are also hoping that this
research will contribute to our country. Also civilians will be benefit from
this research they will know why this law created.

Definition of key term

For a better understanding of the study, the following terms are defined in
the context of this research.
1. Social Media- Websites and applications that enable users to
create and share content or to participate in social networking.

2. Education- The process of receiving or giving systematic

instruction, especially at a school or university.

3. Prohibiting- formally forbid (something) by law, rule, or other

authority.

Background of the Study

 We asked some questions for our research to seek information. That we hope
that each of question that we have provided will be answered in the end of
tge research. We will ask some grade 11 students of Saint Francis Of Assisi
Collage to know what they think about the topic. We want to learn how this
law works. Prohibiting the use of social media in class projects. We searched
some information about the topic, During our research we found some
information that Department of Information and Communication
Technology wants to stop schools from using social media’s in doing class
projects and homeworks.
Chapter 2

Foreign Literature
 Abu-Shanab and Al-Tarawneh (2013) explored the advantages and
disadvan-tages of Facebook utilizing university students. A sample of
206 students responded to a survey containing 10 advantages and
10 disadvantages of Facebook, and yielded interesting results.
The study did not focus on students’ academic performance, but
took the issue as a general view of social media influence. Social
networks are becoming major tools for education, and
entertainment. The human nature is keen on interacting with
people and finding common areas and interests. In education, two
streams are prevailing: the use of social networks as a tool
supporting activities deemed important for the purpose of
educational institutions, instructors, and stu-dents. The second
stream is the bad influence social network inflicts on students
behaviors and time management. This study will explore the
relationship between performance and SN use. The following
sections will review the literature related to the two streams and
the performance issue related to students.

 Social Media’s Effect on Academic Performance Kaveri

Subrahmanyam and Patricia Greenfield state that using online
communication has both negative and positive effects, because
there are harmful ways in which the internet could be used. They
also state that nowadays, schools are trying their best to control
how students use digital media on school grounds (Subrahmanyam
and Greenfield, 2008). In some schools, leaders believe that social
media has a positive impact on the development of the students’
education. In other schools, leaders have banned the access of social
network sites, because they fear the students’ interaction on them,
although, they know the positive impact social media has on the
students’ education (Ahn, 2010). Ahn also states that the examples
of the media platforms the younger generation use are: YouTube, to
share and stream videos, and Facebook, to have a complete identity
online, and a network of friends. Ahn says, researchers look at the
profiles of the social media users as part of the process needed for
the students to develop their identity (Ahn, 2010). Gwenn Schurgin
O’Keeffe and Kathleen Clarke-Pearson believe that there are
negative impacts caused by social media, which include accessing
inappropriate content and not “understanding online privacy.” They
also say that, there is online harassment and cyberbullying, which is
mostly caused by risks of peer to peer engagement (O’Keeffe and
Clarke-Pearson, 2011)

 The research on social networking and children usually focuses on

many aspects or dimensions. Most empirical studies dealt with the
relations between using social networking and academic performance
(Alwagait et al., 2015, Hawi and Samaha, 2016). Some studies related to
being connected (Miller et al., 2015, Tomczyk and Kopecky, 2016).
Some studies touched on the sensitive role of the involvement of
parents in their children’s use of social networking (Lovea et al.,
2016).Empirical studies showed mixed results with regard to the impact
of social networks on academic performance. Studies have found that
the participation of students on social networks may have both positive
and negative impacts on their academic performance. Mehmood and
Taswir, 2013 noted that “the use of social media networks and the
Internet is one of the most important factors that can
influence educational performance of students positively or adversely.”
Local Literature

 Facebook has paved the way for a faster, more comfortable and
efficient social interaction.Even though many social networking sites
preceded it,Facebook is the current biggest social networking sitewith
over six hundred million users worldwide and it has an annual growth
of 45.2% (Inside Facebook gold, June 2011).In addition, it has more
than 28 million users in the Philippines which ranks no. 8 in Facebook
statistics by country (socialbakers.com, 2012). Unfortunately, Filipino
students have abused the advantages that Facebook extends to them
and they have been using it without caution and
moderation.Eventually, Facebook has greatly affected their academic
lives.Generally, Garcia (2011) stated that Facebook usage have
apparent effects, both positive and negative, on students. In 2010,
Kirschner and Karpinskifound that Facebook usersspent less time in
studying and they had lower grades than those who did not use
SNS.However, the study of Kabre and Brown (2011) and Rosen (2011)
showed that Facebook usage has no effect on academic performance of
students. In relation with this worsening phenomenon, this study will
seek toanalyze the impact of Facebook addiction on the academic
performance of Filipino students in a multi-perspective approach which
some previous studies failed to do so. It will also try to bring about
latest statistical data and draw conclusion based on the recent trends
of Facebook addiction in the country

 Social Networking is one of the trendiest topics being talked about by

the students in arellano university. Examples of social networking sites
are Friendster, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Social Networking Sites
help us to communicate with our friends, classmates, and relatives but
they also allow us to communicate with other people who contribute to
common interests with us. For instance a person added another person
as a friend on Facebook since both of them is addicted on playing
Restaurant City. Through these social networking sites, we develop
virtual interpersonal relationships. An interpersonal relationship is a
relatively long-term relationship between two or more people. This
connection may be based on emotions like love and liking, regular
business interactions, or some other type of social commitments.
Interpersonal relationships take place in a great variety of contexts,
such as family, friends, marriage, acquaintances, work, clubs,
neighborhoods, and churches. They may be regulated by law, custom,
or mutual agreement, and are the basis of social groups and society as
a whole.Social networking sites manipulate the interpersonal
relationship of students in many ways. Through social networking sites,
users come to meet other people worldwide. These people can affect
the user’s interpersonal relationship with other people close to
him/her. This influence can either be good or bad for the user. The
researchers chose the topic about the influence of social networking
sites to be studied because it is shown evidently that most of the
students in arellano university use Social Networking Sites as part of
their activities done in the internet.

 People all over the world have been enjoying the benefits of using
technology nowadays.  In the past, communicating and free sharing
of thought between people are restricted by long distance, race, and
even religion.  But now these barriers can no longer stop the flow of
information and knowledge because now the new world of social
networking allows free sharing of thoughts through online social
networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the
like.Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites
the majority of them use these to satisfy their social needs more than
their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever they
want – they can upload or download data, they can make new friends
and comment on other people’s lives, and they can even create other
online identities the real world does not allow.  It has been observed
too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in
the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their
acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of
reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic
requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their
materials online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill
boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their work.
The darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents
is that some students are getting lazier and are no longer interested
in going to school.  This is probably due to being extensively indulged
to get global access and therefore leading them to perform less
academically.

Foreign Studies

 Few prior studies have attempted to show that social-media use

harms users' well-being, and those that have either put participants
in unrealistic situations or were limited in scope, asking them to
completely forego Facebook and relying on self-report data, for
example, or conducting the work in a lab in as little time as an
hour."We set out to do a much more comprehensive, rigorous study
that was also more ecologically valid," says Hunt, associate director of
clinical training in Penn's Psychology Department. To that end, the
research team, which included recent alumni Rachel Marx and
Courtney Lipson and Penn senior Jordyn Young, designed their
experiment to include the three platforms most popular with a cohort
of undergraduates, and then collected objective usage data
automatically tracked by iPhones for active apps, not those running
the background. Each of 143 participants completed a survey to
determine mood and well-being at the study's start, plus shared shots
of their iPhone battery screens to offer a week's worth of baseline
social-media data. Participants were then randomly assigned to a
control group, which had users maintain their typical social-media
behavior, or an experimental group that limited time on Facebook,
Snapchat, and Instagram to 10 minutes per platform per day. For the
next three weeks, participants shared iPhone battery screenshots to
give the researchers weekly tallies for each individual. With those
data in hand, Hunt then looked at seven outcome measures including
fear of missing out, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. “Here's the
bottom line," she says. "Using less social media than you normally
would leads to significant decreases in both depression and
loneliness. These effects are particularly pronounced for folks who
were more depressed when they came into the study."Hunt stresses
that the findings do not suggest that 18- to 22-year-olds should stop
using social media altogether. In fact, she built the study as she did to
stay away from what she considers an unrealistic goal. The work
does, however, speak to the idea that limiting screen time on these
apps couldn't hurt.

 New study, from York University in Canada, found that young women
who were asked to interact with a post of someone whom they
perceived as more attractive felt worse about themselves afterwards.
The 120 undergraduate women were either asked to find on
Facebook and Instagram a peer who they felt was more attractive, or
a family member who they did not feel was more attractive, and
leave a comment. They reported that they felt worse about their own
appearances only in the first condition, with peers, but not
family. What’s also important to point out, but was not studied here,
is that making any kind of comparison—not just to people who you
think are more attractive or smarter, but also people who you think
are less attractive or smart (or anything) than you—is linked to poorer
well-being. A really neat study a few years ago illustrated this, finding
that the link between social media and depression was largely
mediated by this “social comparison” factor. And again, this was true
in either direction, “upward” or “downward.”The bottom line is again
what researchers—and even some of the developers of social media
apps themselves—have been saying for a while now. Social media,
especially spending long periods of time on it, is just not that good for
us. We may not need to quit it completely, but limiting our time on
social media considerably, and reconnecting with friends and family
in real life, is definitely the way to go.

 The researcher tries to portray, social networking sites such as

Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are gaining popularity with the pace
of time and due to their attractive features the youth of today’s
generation is fascinated towards them. The study argues against the
notion claiming that due to the rapid popularity of social networking
sites the youth tends to distract themselves from their studies and
professions but on the contrary is also developing friendly and social
ties with the world that revolves around them [1].This paper
elucidates that men spend more time as compared to women on
social networking sites to review these social issues and yet women
are very sensitive to issues like these exisiting in the world. The youth
takes active participation and also raises their voices in order to
express their opinions and views on social issues being discussed on
these sites. Also, the findings state that even though the youth
reciprocates to these events they still do not take up discussions
beyond web and forget about them once they sign off. Thereby, these
sites prove to be a boon to the youth in terms of spreading awareness
about these issues that arise [2].This study establishes the fact that
out of all the respondents targeted, nearly 55.4% of the total
population from people ranging in the age group 15 to 25 use social
networking sites and also states that most of the users from the same
age group use these sites as a medium to seek entertainment. In
terms of gender division, male users are more as compared to female
users wherein male users generally derive knowledge based
information from these sites. It focuses on the fact that most of the
youth uses these sites due to influence of their friends and just
because their friends have been using and accessing these sites. This
also illustrates the academic performance of students using social
networking sites. Students acquiring 3.0 to 3.5 GPA in examinations
are most inclines to these sites for entertainment [3].
Local Studies

 Social Networking in the Philippines.

For Filipinos, social media is a form of connectivity that serves as a

means to establish and reinforce their relationships. They care a
great deal when it comes to connecting with others. Engaging in
social networking sites is the number one activity among internet
users as its user-generated content allows for real-time updates
from people from all over the country (and beyond!).With roughly
76 million active social media users spending an average of four
hours and 12 minutes per day logged in, the Philippines had been
dubbed the “social networking capital of the world” based on a
study released by Hootsuite and United Kingdom-based
consultancy We Are Social.Facebook rests at the top spot of the
most used social networking platform, with 97% of Filipino social
media users actively using it or have at least signed up and created
a profile. YouTube comes next at 96% and Instagram places third
with 64%.With regards to Facebook, millennials still have the
greatest social media presence. Those in their late teens and early
20s comprise 33% of all users, followed by those in their late 20s
and early 30s at 30%.News also breaks faster on social networking
sites than in traditional media, making it the go-to place for
connectivity or keeping up with current events. By far, the most
popular activity for Filipinos online is engaging in social, consisting
of 90% of total internet users - which is ironic because the internet
speed in the Philippines is infamously the slowest in Asia.

 The Philippines is the top country worldwide for the most time
spent on the internet. The latest Digital 2019 report from Hoot
suite and We Are Social shows that users from the Philippines
spend an average of 10 hours and 2 minutes on the internet daily
via any device. Trailing behind the Philippines is Brazil, with internet
usage time averaging 9 hours and 29 minutes; and Thailand, who
was 2018’s top internet user, with 9 hours and 11 minutes. The
2019 report reveals a modest increase in the worldwide average of
internet use to 6 hours and 42 minutes from last year’s estimate of
6 hours. Meanwhile, internet users from Japan spend the least
amount of time on the internet at an average of only 3 hours and
45 minutes. According to the report, internet users from the
Philippines also spend the most time on social media, averaging 4
hours and 12 minutes, while the average time spent worldwide is
only 2 hours and 16 minutes. Brazil continues to trail the Philippines
in time spent on social media averaging 3 hours and 34 minutes,
followed by Colombia with 3 hours and 31 minutes average social
media time. Japan remains as the country with the least time spent
on social media at 36 minutes.

 Filipinos continue to reign supreme in terms of social media use

globally. A report by creative agency We Are Social and social media
management platform Hootsuite showed Filipinos spend the most
time on the internet and on social media sites. The "Digital 2019:
Global Digital Overview" showed Filipinos spend an average of 10
hours, 2 minutes on the internet via any device. Brazil came in
second place with internet usage averaging 9 hours and 29 minutes,
while Thailand came in third at 9 hours, 11 minutes. The worldwide
average for hours spent on the internet is at 6 hours, 42 minutes,
down a few minutes from 2018's 6 hours and 49 minutes. The
report also showed Filipinos usually spend over 4 hours on social
media daily, followed by Brazilian’s (3 hours, 34 minutes) and
Colombians (3 hours, 31 minutes). The worldwide average for social
media use is at 2 hours, 16 minutes. The report said that as of
January 2019, there are now 4.39 billion internet users worldwide,
an increase of 366 million (9 percent) compared to January 2018.
There are also 3.48 billion social media users in 2019, with 3.26
billion using social media on mobile devices. Facebook continues to
dominate the internet as the top social media platform with over
2.71 billion users, followed by YouTube with 1.9 billion users, and
messaging services WhatsApp (1.5 billion) and Facebook Messenger
with 1.3 billion users. This is the fourth year in a row that the
Philippines topped social media use worldwide. Philippines is
world's top social media user: study Last year, the Philippines
placed second in terms of internet use, with users spending an
average of 9 hours, 29 minutes on the internet daily. It was only a
few minutes behind Thailand's 9 hours, 38 minutes average.

Synthesis

 Researchers in related literature shows how social media is very

popular by now researchers shows the advantages and
disadvantages of using social media and also contains how the
social media affects the academic performance of a student. Social
media is very popular because of advantages of it it’s makes our
life easier. In local and foreign studies shows the study they do and
it shows that we are geting bored if our gadgets are not use even
in hours. In local study shows that the phillipines is the country
that spend more time in social media sites like fb, twitter,
instagram, etc… The data collected can support out topic because
it points out that the social media is very popular that’s the reason
why social media is now using in school projects
Chapter 3

Introduction

This chapter shows the research process or method that we used in

conducting this research. This chapter provides information regarding the method
that we used in undertaking this research as well as a justification on why we
chose this type of method. Also this chapter describes the various steps that we
took in conducting this research, this includes the research strategy, research
method, research approach, methods of data collection, selection of the sample,
research process, type of data analysis, the ethical considerations and the
research limitations of the project.

This research explored the reactions of the grade 11 students of SFAC regarding
the proposal of The Department of Information and Communications Technology
(DICT) which states that schools should refrain teachers from using social media
for class projects and homework.

Description of the Respondents

As the total of students of Grade 11 in SFAC in all majors were

the respondents of the study. They are describe according to their
profile such as (name, sex/gender, and age).
Research Design/Structure

Generally, research design means a structure to plan and execute a

particular research. Research design is the crucial part of the research as it
includes all the four important considerations: the strategy, the conceptual
framework, the identification of whom and what to study on and the tools and
procedures to be used for collecting and analyzing data. The research design
basically is divided into several types for example qualitative research and
quantitative research. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research
method. Qualitative research method was developed in the social sciences to
enable researchers to study social and cultural phenomena: observe feelings,
thoughts, behaviours and the belief of the mass society. Examples of qualitative
methods are action research, case study research and grounded theory.
Qualitative data sources include observation and participation observation
(fieldwork), interviews and questionnaires, documents and texts, and the
researcher’s impressions and reactions. For this research, method of interview
was employed. The interview is a mean of Stopping the use of social media in
class project. Interviewing of selected individuals is a very important method
often used by qualitative researchers. The rationale for using the interview
methods is to enable the researcher to find out what is on their mind, what they
think and how they feel about something. This study critically aims at gathering
bits of information received from interviewing certain numbers of grade 11
students of Saint Francis of Assisi College In addition, the researcher also explored
whether the students accept the stopping the use of social media in class projects
Gathering Tool

In this particular research we chose to conduct one on one interviews with

our respondents. The reason on why we chose this method over other methods is
because we think that this method is the most effective technique that we can
use and also we think that one on one interview is the most appropriate method
that we can use to gather the data that we need because our research is aiming
to know how will our respondents react to our topic and that’s why we think that
conducting an interview is the way to go. In addition, the reason on why we chose
to conduct interviews is because we want to know the detailed answers of our
respondents and we believe that just simply handing them survey can’t quite
satisfy our need to know their detailed reaction about our topic .The value of
interviewing is not only because it builds a holistic snapshot, analyses words,
reports detailed views of informants; but also because it enables interviewees to
“speak in their own voice and express their own thoughts and feelings” (Berg,
2007: 96). As noted by Dörnyei, (2007: 132), qualitative data are ‘most often’
collected by researchers through interviews and questionnaires. However,
interviews -compared to questionnaires- are more powerful in eliciting narrative
data that allows researchers to investigate people's views in greater depth (Kvale,
1996; 2003). In addition, Cohen et al (2007: 29) add that interviewing is “a
valuable method for exploring the construction and negotiation of meanings in a
natural setting”. We totally agree with the statements of Kvale and Cohen and I
think that it’s safe to say that their statements affected our decision in choosing
whether we should do an interview or a survey.
Data Gathering Procedure

As we said earlier we conducted one on one interviews in order to gather

data or information, these are the steps that we made in order to accomplish it:

1st step: We made questions that were going to ask the interviewee.

2nd step: And the person that we are ask is need to answer properly the questions.

3rd step: Finally after we interview the students we are now collecting all the
answers.

Data analysis plan

To generate sample which allows the respondents understanding

Aim to the social process of internet.

We are going to interview the respondents of Grade 11 and

answer it on our research question completely and clearly.
