1. What is the difference between language acquisition and language learning?

Processing the language acquisition and language learning is different in the manner that, Learning acquisition is learning the mother tongue language
without any formal teaching and in an informal set up. Transmitting the mother tongue or the native language through verbal and non verbal means of communication
and this also happens in the child’s feelings in a natural, and subconscious manner.

Whilst, Language learning is the outcome of the direct instruction in the rules of the language. They have a basic knowledge of grammar. This happens in a
formal set up.

LANGUAGE ACQUISITION LANGUAGE LEARNING

2. Label: Language Acquisition or Language Learning

• subconscious process • direct instruction in the rules

• unaware of grammatical rules • they usually have a basic knowledge of grammar (in their L1)
• happens naturally • presupposes learners have a conscious knowledge of the new language
• they repeat what is said and get a feel for right and wrong and can talk about that knowledge (metacognition)
• child needs a source of natural communication

3 True or False and why?

T / F Children who have the ability to memorize grammar rules and complete pages of grammar drills will learn to speak and write English more quickly.

T / F The more time students spend soaking up English in the mainstream classroom, the faster they will learn the language.

T/F The emotional state of the learner interferes with the acquisition of a new language.

T/F Children learn a second language faster and more easily than teenagers and adults do.

Did any of these things surprise you?

No, as I have observed with my kids. They communicate better than me. And they can also relate with other kids at their age like their cousins and
neighbors who grew up in an English speaking environment. They speak using the English language better than the parents. And yes, we do not speak the
language but they have been watching English speaking movies and TV series.

1. Watch the Deb Roy TED talk (0:00 -11:00min). When might “error correction” be taking place and how?

Error correction should take place as soon as possible and as long as it will not offend the
learner/s. But when this happens like inside the classroom and in the middle of a class discussion
perhaps the teacher would park it in a while as to not to disrupt the whole class. Moreover,
correction is needed and should done to correct something and to enlighten.
But if this is done repeatedly, the learners might get frustrated on the outcome of such,
thus continuous encouragement and enlightenment follow up to the learner/student.

1. Watch the entire video by Dr Limbacher-Riebold. How do we process acquisition and learning differently?

Processing the language acquisition and language learning is different in the manner
that, Learning acquisition is learning the mother tongue language without any formal teaching
and in an informal set up, transmitting the mother tongue or the native language through verbal
and non verbal means of communication and this also happens in the child’s feelings in a natural,

1. Do you teach what you believe? What do you believe about Communicative Language Learning and student success in learning a language?

I don’t teach what I believe. I am a 21st century teacher, thus I am willing to adapt to the upcoming change/s and the change/s at
hand.
I believe that Communicative Language Learning is an adept approach to the kind of learners we have right now. These learners
wanted to be a part or involved to stimulate further their keen intuitions in learning. Whilst, for the not so smart learners well they wanted also to be a
part of something thus, a part of them is telling you that he/she wanted to learn though it is at a slower pace.
A student success in learning a language will be evident if the learner/s is/are engaged at his/her/their learning stage and
environment

1. Choose a grammar point and list three contexts for a narrative story that requires the use of that grammar point.

GRAMMAR POINT-----THREE CONTEXTS FOR A NARATIVE STORY

PRONOUN- From your point of view
- From the second person of view
- From the third person of view

1. Choose only one of those and create the chart that will scaffold your students.

PRONOUN- From your point of view

Example. I go out to see the soft opening of the new Picachu Shop. (Ask. Who went to see the opening
of the new shop?)

Characteristics of a communicative grammar language activity

Students need to communicate in order to be successful

Is meaningful/relevant to the students

Has comprehensible input

Has an authentic context

May incorporate scaffolding to lower the risk (affective filter)

01 additional Reflection Questions (Optional)

Complete the sentence stems:

One thing I have learned about teaching grammar communicatively is…
If the teaching starts from a younger age, and that learners are fully engaged in the matter, these learners in the future will be
successful in their respective lives and that they can articulate well and speak up for themselves.

One thing I have learned about myself as a teacher is…

That learning continues whether in this time of the pandemic or hopefully in the face-to-face class. The learnings gained form this
training hopefully will be cascade down to the learners and that they may be fully engaged and continue the enthusiasm for
learning.

One thing that surprised me is…

That learners will be more articulative and responsive if as young learners, they have been taught, been practicing and been using
the language.

One thing that will impact my teaching is…

That I will surely try to incorporate these learnings and teachings in the coming school year.

01 Checklist and scaffolding

For the Deb Roy TED talk you can use the “turn on transcripts” feature. The answer is close to the time that the graph is projected. It shows how the caregiver’s language
changes.

The Limbacher-Reibold video is just 2 minutes long. There are titles throughout.

It can be surprising once we take a moment to find out what we believe vs the research. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don’t. Knowing this and why, is powerful.

Enjoy making a story!

Thank you for your engagement and enthusiasm. ☺
