Except for a few unfortunate individuals, no law in this world can go against the fact that for most of us
our family is an essential part of our lives. The moment you enter this cruel world, where each man is for
himself, there are some near and dear ones out there who will do anything to ensure your happiness.
We are nothing more than a vulnerable and fragile object, without someone taking care of us on our
arrival in this world. Despite all the odds, your family will take care of your well-being, and try their best
to provide you with the greatest comforts in the world. No one out there, except your family must forgive
the endless number of mistakes you may make in your life. Apart from teaching you forgive and forget
lessons, they are always there for you, when you need them the most.
Family is the only place where children study a lot after school. In school, teachers teach children about
the subjects which will help them to find a good job in future. But at home, parents teach children about
good habits. They are not only the elements which help the children to shape their personalities but they
also prepare them a sustainable and bright future.
A good family makes a greater society. Father, mother, and children have to work in order to build a
strong family. If any one of them fails, the whole family may collapse. The good name of the whole
family can be ruined by a single member of the family. In order to avoid that unhappy scenario, every
family member has to work hard and try their best. As a result, they will set good examples for the whole
society. Families impact very much on society and societies create countries.

The family in Britain is changing. The once typical British family headed by two parents has
undergone substantial changes during the twentieth century. In particular, there has been a rise in the
number of single-person households, which increased from 18 to 29 per cent of all households between
1971 and 2002. By the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be more single people than married people.
Fifty years ago, this would have been socially unacceptable in Britain.
In the past, people got married and stayed married. Divorce was very difficult, expensive and took
a long time. Today, people's views on marriage are changing. Many couples, mostly in their twenties or
thirties, live together (cohabit) without getting married. Only about 60% of these couples will eventually
get married.
In the past, people married before they had children, but now about 40% of children in Britain are
born to unmarried cohabiting) parents. In 2000, around a quarter of unmarried people between the ages
of 16 and 59 were cohabiting in Great Britain. Cohabiting couples are also starting families without first
being married. Before 1960 this was very unusual, but in 2001 around 23 per cent of births in the UK
were to cohabiting couples.
People are generally getting married at a later age now and many women do not want to have
children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a baby until their late
thirties.
The number of single-parent families is increasing. This is mainly due to more marriages ending
in divorce, but some women are also choosing to have children as lone parents without being married.

Exercise 11. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Building positive family relationships
The ordinary, everyday things that families do together can help build strong relationships with
teenagers. Regular family meals are a great chance for everyone to chat about their day, or about
interesting things that are going on or coming up. If parents encourage everyone to have a say, no one
will feel they’re being put on the spot to talk. Also, many families find that meals are more enjoyable
when the TV isn’t turned on!
We should all take turns choosing outdoor activities for our families. A relaxing holiday or
weekend away together as a family can also build togetherness.
One-on-one time with the child gives the parents the chance to stay connected and enjoy each
other’s company. It can also be a chance to share thoughts and feelings.
Parents should celebrate the child’s accomplishments, share his disappointments, and show
interest in his hobbies. Sometimes it’s just a matter of showing up to watch the child play sports or music,
or giving him a lift to extracurricular activities.
Family traditions, routines and rituals can help parents and their children set aside regular dates
and special times. For example, we might have a movie night together, a favourite meal or cooking
session on a particular night, a family games afternoon or an evening walk together.

JAMES
My name is James, I'm fourteen, and I moved to this town with my family three months ago. My
parents lived here when they were young, but my brother and I didn't know anyone here except a few
aunts and uncles we'd met when we spent a couple of weeks with my grandparents, during school
holidays. When I started school, one of my cousins, Sophie, who was in my class, was very friendly for
the first week and I was happy to have a friend in a strange place. Then, for no reason, she stopped talking
to me and I felt very hurt and lonely for several weeks.
In the end I made some more friends and since I got to know them, I've been fine. Now Sophie is
having a disco party for her birthday next week and she has invited me. I don't want to go. My brother
says he heard someone say she only asked me because her parents said she had to. But my mum and dad
say it would be rude not to accept. Some of my new friends are invited, too. How can I show Sophie that
she can't behave towards me without causing a family quarrel?

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 45.
If you want to take the whole family on holiday, and keep everybody happy, then I have found
just the place for you. I recently went with a group of friends to stay at the Greenwood Holiday Village,
which is open from May until October.
Built in the centre of a forest, Greenwood is a great place to stay whatever the weather. Its main
attraction for families is the indoor World of Water, where young and old can have fun in the different
pools. Some of these, however, are for serious swimmers only.
For sporty people, the Country Club offers tennis, squash and badminton. If your children are too
young to join in these sports, there are activity clubs. Greenwood is a good place for families as it is
traffic-free - you explore on foot or by bike. Some people complained that this was inconvenient, but I
was pleased to be out in the fresh air. For evening entertainment, there are shows and cinemas.
Accommodation is in a variety of apartments of different sizes. These have up to four bedrooms,
a kitchen and a bathroom, as well as a dining area. Before going, I thought the apartments might not be
big enough for all of us, but I was pleasantly surprised - it was not too crowded at all.
I will definitely go back to Greenwood next year. Why don't you give it a try? Visit their website
for further information now!
