B. NURSING MANAGEMENT
Situation 1. The basis of scoring is the rubrics found in the last part of this
assessment Task= 48 points.
In paragraph form (not less than 150 words), explain your concept about leadership
and management and its application in nursing practice. The following questions
may guide you:
Do you believe that leadership and management are different? Do you think they
have the same importance in our nursing practice? Do you feel that one is more
important than the other? Explain your answers.
For me, leadership and management are different because leadership is our
ability to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward organizational
success, while management is the controlling of a group or a set of entities to
accomplish a group. Though the two share several similar traits, they differ in the
sense that while all leaders are managers, not all managers are leaders. Leadership
is the ability to make the people understand and believe in your vision and help you
achieve those things while management is more about administering and making
sure the day-to-day are happening as they should. Influence and inspiration separate
the leaders from the managers, not power and control. Both of these have the same
importance in our nursing practice. With the evolving healthcare industry, the things
that always remain constant are nursing leadership and management, as these
directly impact an organization’s drive, performance, and people. As nurse leaders
become increasingly aware of the correlation between a stronger team and stronger
achievements in patient quality and safety, understanding how to incorporate steps
for strategic, long-term success into day-to-day practice is the key. A nurse leader
will problem-solve an issue related to bedside care, patient safety, budget
constraints, and staffing shortages. Being able to perform well under pressure and
can balance the myriad of daily challenges, is no small endeavor for even the most
experienced nurse leader. This style of nursing leadership and management has
been linked to improved patient outcomes, reduced medical errors, and improved
staff retention, benefiting the healthcare workplace as a whole. If one of them is
missing, there maybe a huge effect on the ability of the nurse and the team to
function well in a certain organization and in handling the patient. I think, both of
them are important and they should be in-calculated in the profession. Imagine
having both, they are effective in making things to be better. In the performance of
the whole, they are both important. As a leader, having a good management will not
only improve you as a whole but also in minimizing errors in the profession.
Situation 2: Answer #1-3 base on the situation provided.
You are the head nurse of the medical ward. Your supervisor is sending two nurses
from each hospital ward to an upcoming critical care conference in a zoom platform.
The supervisor requested each head nurse under her jurisdiction to submit the
identified nurses to join in the conference. All of the 16 full-time nurses of the medical
ward would like to go. All are active in the local critical care organization. Financial
resources, however, limit your choice to two.
1. What manager’s role are you going to apply to the situation? Give 1-2
sentence/s to rationalize your answer? (5 points)
In this situation, the manager’s role that is applicable is the decisional role,
and this decisional role will show how will I, as a head nurse decide or make a
choice; since all of the nurses in the medical ward would like to go. My role is to
negotiate with them and decide who should I pick to go to the said critical
conference.
