‫‪What is this life if full of care,‬‬

‫کیا ہے یہ زندگی اگر بھری ہوئی ہے پریشانی سے‬
‫?‪We have no time to stand and stare‬‬
‫ہمارے پاس غوروفکر کرنے کا وقت نہیں ہے‬
‫‪No time to stand beneath the boughs,‬‬
‫ہمارے پاس درختوں کی شاخوں کے نیچے کھڑے ہونے کا وقت نہیں ہے‬
‫‪And stare as long as sheep or cows.‬‬
‫اور فطرت کی خوبصورتی کو دیکھنے کے لیے اتنا بھی وقت نہیں جتنا گائے‬
‫اور بھیڑ ک پاس ہوتا ہے‬

‫‪No time to see,when woods we pass,‬‬

‫جب ہم جنگل سے ُگزرتے ہیں تو ھمارے پاس دیکھنے کا وقت نہیں‬
‫‪Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.‬‬
‫جہاں گلہریاں اپنے اخروٹ گھاس میں چُھپاتی ہیں‬

‫‪No time to see, in broad daylight,‬‬

‫ہمارے پاس چمکدار ِدن کی روشنی میں دیکھنے کا وقت نہیں‬
‫‪Streams full of stars,like skies at night.‬‬
‫ا ُن ندیوں کو جو ایسے ستاروں بھری ہوتی ہیں جیسے رات آسمان ستاروں بھرا‬

‫کہ کیسے اُس کا مُنہ اُس مسکراہٹ سے بھر جاتا ہے جو آنکھوں سے شروع‬

‫‪A poor life this if,full of care,‬‬

‫اگر یہ ہماری زندگی ہے تو پھر یہ بڑی پریشان ُکن زندگی ہے‬

‫اگر میں تاتاری کا بادشاہ ہوتا‬
Myself and me alone,
‫صرف میں اور صرف میں ہی‬
My bed should be of ivory,
‫میرا بستر ہاتھی دانت کا بنا ہوتا‬
Of beaten gold my throne;
‫اور میرا تخت خالص سونے کا بنا ہوتا‬
And in my court should peacocks flaunt,
‫اور میرے دربار میں مور ناچتے پھرتے‬
And in my forests tigers haunt,
‫اور میرے جنگالت میں چیتے رہتے‬
And in my pools great fishes slant,
 ‫اور میرے پانی والے تاالبوں میں نایاب مچھلیاں ترچھا تیرتی‬
‫‪Their fins athwart the sun.‬‬

‫‪And in the evening lamps would shine,‬‬
‫اور شام کے وقت چراغ جل اُٹھتے‬
‫‪Yellow as honey,red as wine,‬‬

‫شعلہ شہد جتنا زرد اور شراب جتنا سُرخ ہوتا‬
‫‪While harp,and flute,and mandoline,‬‬
‫ت موسیقی سے‬
‫اور کئی قسم کے آال ِ‬
‫‪Made music sweet and gay.‬‬
 ‫کانوں میں رس گھولنے والی ُدھنیں بجتی‬

‫‪If I were Lord of Tartary,‬‬

‫اگر میں تاتاری کا بادشاہ ہوتا‬
‫‪I 'd wear a robe of beads,‬‬
‫تو میں موتیوں سے بنا ہوا ایک قیمتی لباس زیب تن کر لیتا‬
‫‪White and gold,and green they 'd-‬‬
‫اُن موتیوں کا رنگ سُنہری‪،‬سفید اور سبز ہوتا‬
‫;‪And clustered thick as seeds‬‬
‫اور وہ میرے لباس پر دبیز مقدار میں ہوتے‬

Summary of the Poem

                                            

In this short poem, the poetess makes three resolutions to

her at the arrival of the new year.It is a time of self
impeachment.So she says that in the coming years of her
life ,she would remain silent most of the time in order to
purify her contaminated soul.She says that in the past
years she has been ignorant of the duties of her life.She
lost the aim of her life.Now she is fully determined to know
the aim and mission of her life and she would remember it
two times a day.Her third promise to herself is that she
would face the bitter realities of life and by facing the bitter
realities of life she would get comfort.

Kagwa hunted the lions,
‫کاگوا شیروں کا شکاری تھا‬
Through bush and forest went his spear.
‫وہ جنگل میں شیروں کا شکار کیا کرتا تھا‬
One day he found the skull of a man
‫ایک ِدن اُسے ایک آدمی کی کھوپڑی ِملی‬
And said to it, "How did you come here"?
‫کاگوا نے اُس سے کہا تُم کھوپڑی کیسے بنی‬
The skull opened its mouth and said
‫کھوپڑی نے کہا‬
'Talking brought me here.'
‫غلط بیانی نے ُمجھے اِس حالت تک پُہنچا دیا‬

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted

Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
‫جو نیچے سرسبز پہاڑی کے طرف جاتا تھا اور جس کے دونوں طرف سیڈرن‬

A savage place!as holy and enchanted

As e'er  beneath a waning moon was haunted

By woman wailing for her demon-lover!

And from this chasm,with ceaseless turmoil seething,
‫اور اسی شگاف سے نہ ختم ہونے واال شور کرتے ہوئے‬
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,.
‫جیسے زمین کو سانس چڑھی ہو‬
A might fountain momently was forced:
‫ایک بُہت بڑا چشمہ لمحہ با لمحہ پھوٹ پڑتا ہے‬
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
‫جس کے پانی کے بڑے بڑے ٹکڑوں کے درمیان‬
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
‫جیسے آسمان سے اولے پڑتے ہوں‬
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher s' flail,
‫یا گندم گاہنے والے ڈنڈے کے نیچے بُھس لگے دانے گرتے ہوں‬
And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
‫اور اِن رقص کرتی چٹانوں کے درمیان ایک دفعہ اور ہمیشہ کے لیے‬
It flung up momently the sacred river.
‫ مقدس بہنا شروع کر دے‬ ‫یہ دریا‬
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
‫پانچ میل تو لہراتا بل کھاتا‬
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
‫یہ دریا مقدس وادیوں اور جنگل میں بہتا ہو‬
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
‫پھر ایسی گھاٹیوں میں سے ُگزرتا ہو جن کی پیماش انسان کے بس میں نہ ہو‬
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
‫اور شور کرتا ایک گہرے سمندر میں گِر جائے‬
And mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
‫اور اسی شور میں قبالئی خان دور سے سُن لیتا‬
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
‫اپنے آباؤ اجداد کی جنگ کے بارے میں پیشن گوئی کرتی ہوئی آوازوں کو‬
The shadows of the dome of pleasure
‫اور اِس محل کے سائے‬
Floated midway on the waves;
‫دریا کی لہروں کے درمیان تیرتے‬
Where was heard the mingled measure
‫جہاں سے ملی جُلی آوازیں آ رہی ہوتی‬
From the fountain and the caves.

It was a miracle of rare device,
