Brief Lesson Plan in English 8

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students must be able to:
a. Distinguish the central idea by examining the flow of events and dialogues in the short
story "The Country's Good Son" by Minn New Thein.
b. Compare and contrast the character's oath in the story with the other professional's oath.
c. Create a one-minute video that discusses one's expectations and fears about the
profession that they want to pursue.

B. Review of the Previous Lesson


The teacher will ask questions about the previous topic which was about the story “How I
Taught My Grandmother to Read” by Sudha Murty.

C. Motivation
Stick to Many
The teacher will conduct a game, the class will be divided into two groups. Each group will
be given a stick that they will use to portray a certain profession that the other group should guess.
If a group cannot portray anymore, repeat the same profession or cannot guess the profession that
the other group portrays, that group will lose and their opponent will win the game. As part of the
consequence on the losing side, the teacher will give them a script about the story “The Country’s
Good Son” and the group will have to perform it given an enough time to prepare and practice.

D. Unlocking of Difficulties
The teacher will present a video entitled “Marines Recite the Oath of Enlistment” which is
documented by Marine Corps Recruiting and is all about the oath taking of the newly recruited

marines. After having the students watch the video, the teacher will ask questions which focus on
duties and responsibilities of being a soldier.

E. Lesson Proper
The teacher will first introduce the story by connecting the games and the video presented,
then he will make the students familiarized with the story by letting the students, who lose in the
game, perform it using a short play. After the students having familiarize with the story, the teacher
will discuss the flow of events and dialogues of the story to let students examine and come up with
its central idea. Lastly, the students will be asked to share the central idea that they have formed,
as well as, their own interpretation with the story.

F. Generalization
The teacher will ask students to compare the characters and other profession in terms of
their oath.

G. Application
The teacher will conduct another game entitled “Text Me the Answer”, students will
be divided into four groups in which they need to answer the given questions as fast as
they can by sending an SMS to a cellphone number that will be provided and the
questions will be all about the elements and dialogues of the story that was discussed.

H. Values Integration
The story of The Country’s Good Son is about a soldiers’ sacrifice and risking their
lives to serve and protect their country. This will teach the students lessons about
fulfilling duties and responsibilities as stated in oath. As well as, promoting to be a
good citizen and patriotism.

IV. Evaluation
One-Minute Video
In this activity, the class will be divided according to the profession they have chosen, they
will be tasked to create a one-minute video that discusses the expectations and fears to the
profession that they want to pursue. The students will be given 20 minutes to conceptualize and
create a video and 5 minutes to present and explain their video.
