Fighting for Montanans
Winning jackets run in the family. At the
44th Annual Montana Range Days held in
Dillon, Zora Holt recruited three of her friends
— Lina Sturan, Shayla Russell and Katya
Stiegelmeier — into a range team and took off
to Beaverhead County where they ended up
taking top honors as the youth team.
Zora took 4th place in Open Youth, was
Top Range Hand Runner-up, took Grand Range
Display, and also took first place in Illustrated
Talk with a score of 98 out of 100 (four judges
grading her). Her topic was “Bonnie Eats
Weeds: How to Turn your Cow into a Weed
Manager”.
Perhaps her six minutes, 41 seconds
speech Montana Range Days prepared her for
the other night in Malta.
At Montana Attorney General Austin
Knudsen’s September 15th meeting to collect
public comments on the American Prairie
Reserve’s application to change grazing
practices on their BLM allotments.
Zora, a sophomore at Hinsdale, worked up
the courage to address the crowd. This is what
she had to say:
“Hi. I’m Zora Holt, I’m 15, and I live on
my grandma’s ranch 50 miles south of Hinsdale.
Our ranch is right by Pages’, which is owned
by the APR. They have yearlings, and every
now and then we get one or twenty of the little
devils in with our herd. Then we have to get
our horses and get them out. Now what are we
supposed to do if bison get in with our herd? I
don’t know, and I don’t want to find out!”

Drunken Apples Anyone?

We got a tasty-looking “snap chat” photo from Ali
Cook, cooking up some drunken apples, so we asked
her for the recipe and she gladly shared it.
You start with 6-7 apples, whichever kind
you prefer. Ali uses Granny Smith apples, she
says they have more flavor.
You also need 2 cups white sugar, 2
tablespoons cinnamon, 1 tablespoon nutmeg, Vote
and 1/4 cup of bourbon or bourbon whiskey. Ali
uses Maker’s Mark as that’s what she has on hand. TODD YOUNG
