B. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation of the topic

The terms that you have
spelled are terms associated with
our lesson about solving problems Ma’am, our objectives this afternoon are:
involving trigonometric ratios with 1. Illustrate the six trigonometric ratios: sine,
the help of a calculator. But first, let cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and

life situations.

Therefore based on your Yes, ma’am.

performance previously, I am
confident that we can achieve these
objectives this afternoon. Right

Moving on, let us take this

Ma’am, first we have:

Very good. Class who will
come to the board and write the six Sine ϴ = 5/13
trigonometric ratios based on the Cosine ϴ = 12/13
illustration. Tangent ϴ = 5/12
Cosecant ϴ = 13/5
Secant ϴ = 13/12
Cotangent ϴ = 12/5

Class, let’s take another

hypotenuse?

Very good, in solving the

measurement of the hypotenuse, we
are just going to select from those
ratios and work algebraically to solve
the problem, but we can always use
the Pythagorean theorem for this
case. At this point, let’s take the sine
Ma’am, using the sine ratio we have:
ratio. Who will come to the board
and write the formula for the
hypotenuse using the sine ratio?
Solution:
Sine 30 ° = 6/hyp
(Sine 30 ° = 6/hyp) (hyp)(1/ Sine 30 °)
Hyp = 6/Sine 30 °

Excellent, now to solve for the

hypotenuse we use the calculator to
determine the exact value of Sine
30 °, were going to input the
information on the device by clicking

0.5, and we have 12 units as our
hypotenuse. Did you understand
class? Ma’am, using the cosine ratio we have:
Very well, who will come to the
board and try the cosine ratio?
Solution:
Cosine 30 ° = 4/hyp
(Cosine 30 ° = 4/hyp) (hyp)(1/ cosine 30 °)
Hyp = 4/cosine 30 °

Hyp = 4/((
√ 3 ))

8 √3
Hyp = or 4.62 units

Very good, for tangent ratio, we

will do the same, we adjust as to
what are the given data, but for the
rest of the ratios cosecant, secant
and tangent we will utilize their
reciprocal as:

Cosecant ϴ = 1/ Sine ϴ
Secant ϴ = 1/Cosine ϴ
Cotangent ϴ = 1/ Tangent ϴ
hence, we could only access the first
three ratios. Any questions and None, Ma’am.

Ma’am, we solve this type of problem using

a calculator using the sine, cosine, and tangent
function when the problem is looking for sides
while also using the arcsine, arccosine, and
arctangent for problems looking for angles.

Ma’am, the six trigonometric ratios are sine,

cotangent ratios.

Fantastic!

D. Generalization
Okay, class, based on the
discussion that we had earlier, how
do we solve problems involving
triangles that require trigonometric
ratios?

Very good! Again who can recall

the trigonometric ratios that we have
studied?

Very good!

IV. Evaluation
Read and analyze the problems carefully and solve for the sides and angles of a
triangle using trigonometric ratios with the help of a calculator.

1. Find the value of the hypotenuse c in the figure given below.

The

solution to Problem 1:
We are given angle A and the side opposite to it with c the hypotenuse. The
sine ratio gives a relationship between the angle, the side opposite to it and the
hypotenuse as follows:

sin A = opposite / hypotenuse

Angle A and opposite side are known, hence

sin 31 ° = 5.12 / c
Solve for c:

c = 5.12 / sin 31 °
c = 5.12 / 0.5150380749
c = 9.941012615

2. Find the sine, the cosine, and the tangent of the indicated angle.
a.  ∠S b.  ∠R

Solution to problems:

A. ∠S

The length of the hypotenuse is 13. For ∠S, the length of the opposite side is 5, and
the length of the adjacent side is 12.

Sin S  =  opp. / hyp.  =  5 / 13  ≈  0.3846

Cos S  =  adj. / hyp.  =  12 / 13  ≈  0.9231
Tan S  =  opp. / adj.  =  5 / 12  ≈  0.4167
Solution (b) :
The length of the hypotenuse is 13. For ∠R, the length of the opposite side is 12,
and the length of the adjacent side is 5.
Sin R  =  opp. / hyp.  =  12 / 13  ≈  0.9231
Cos R  =  adj. / hyp.  =  5 / 13  ≈  0.3846
Tan R  =  opp. / adj.  =  12 / 5  ≈  2.4
