2
Lecture Objective
To make the student familiar with Heat transfer problems solving
using both of traditional way and soft ware.

Example (1):-
Air at 40 OC flows over along cylinder of 25 mm diameter with an embedded
electrical heater. In series of tests, measurements were made of the power per
unit to length required to maintain to maintain the cylinder surface temperature
at 300 OC for different stream velocity V of the air the results are as follows:

Air velocity (m/s) 1 2 3

Power (W/m) 450 length 658 980

(a) Determine the convection coefficient for each velocity , and display your
results graphically.
(b) Determine the dependence of the convection coefficient on the velocity

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik

Given:-
T ∞= 40 OC D = 25 mm Ts = 300 OC
Required:-
(a) (h) At V1,V2.V3 and Results plotting

(b) Results Analysis

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik

Solution:-
q =h.A.ΔT T ∞= 40 OC

A = ∏.D.L
q =h. ∏.D.L.ΔT
D = 25 mm
q
Power =
L T s= 300 OC

Power =h. ∏.D. ΔT

• For V1 = 1 m/s , Power = 450 W/m
450
h1 = = 22.04 W/m2.K
𝜋×25×10−3 ×(300−40)

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik

• For V2 = 2 m/s , Power = 658 W/m
658
h2 = = 32.2 W/m2.K
𝜋×25×10−3 ×(300−40)

• For V3 = 3 m/s , Power = 980 W/m

980
h3 = = 48.02 W/m2.K
𝜋×25×10−3 ×(300−40)

Example (2):-
The case of power transistor ,which is of length (L = 10 mm) and diameter
(D = 12 mm) ,is cooled by an air stream of temperature (T∞ = 25 OC)
under conditions for which the air maintains an average convection
coefficient of ( h = 100 W/ m2.OK ) on the surface of the case ,What is
the maximum allowable power dissipation if surface exceed 85 OC ?
D

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik

Given:-
L = 10 mm D = 12 mm Ts (max) = 85 OC
Required:-
Maximum allowable power

Solution:-
Important Note :-
This transistor is not evacuated then we have to calculate the total area

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik

Solution:-
Q =h.A.ΔT

ΔT = 85 -25 = 60 OC

𝜋.𝐷2
𝐴= + 𝜋. 𝐷. 𝐿
