Activity Plan #1

Objective: (What you want children to learn) (one only) 5 points.

• This will enhance their cognitive skills by sorting flowers and learning how honey is

made. In the activity the students will cut and glue their bees on a separate piece of paper

enhancing their fine motor skills.

Materials: 5 points

• The HoneyBee by Kristen Hall and Isabelle Arsenault

• Separate piece of paper containing 6 different sizes of flowers

• Construction piece of paper (Blue, Green, Orange)

• Glue stick and liquid glue

• Scissors

• Crayons

• Real honeycomb

Scaffolding: (child’s prior knowledge to this activity is building on) 5 points

Mendez 2

• Students are aware of honeybees but do not know that the honeybees collect pollen and

nectar from flowers to make honey to eat during winter.

Procedure: (in detail-how to carry out the activity) 5 Points

• I will begin with reading “The HoneyBee” by Kristen Hall to the students. Then the

students will move on to coloring their six different size flowers with crayons and when

all students are done then they can begin to cut them out. Next, they will sort their

colored flowers from biggest to smallest and then have students select a piece of colored

construction paper, so students can glue their flowers on the piece of construction paper

they have selected. Once everything has been glued then students can proceed to draw

honeybees and their queen around the flowers as if the honeybees were collecting nectar.

Once that is done students can then select where to draw and color their beehive on the

piece of construction paper. Once done with drawing their beehive, students can write

what sounds bees make and if they do not remember I will revisit the book I read in the

beginning of the activity. Afterwards I will pass around a jar of real honeycomb for

students to see how honey looks inside of the beehive.

DAP Support: (page number and short quote that supports your activity) 5 points

• “All children come to school with experiences and the ideas and theories they have

constructed to make sense of their surroundings. A good science program provides

children with opportunities to share their ideas in multiple ways through both actions and

words.” Page 140

• “Good science programs encourage children to document and represent their work in

multiple ways-through drawings, dramatization, 3-D models, and dictation” pg. 141.

Open ended questions for children: (questions to make a child think) 5 points

• Do you think that the queen bee goes out and collect pollen or nectar too?

• How long do honeybees take to make honey?

• Do honeybees only get pollen and nectar from regular flowers or from trees too?

• Are honeybees the only bees or is there other different kinds of them?

• Can all kinds of bees make honey?

• What is a stinger and do all bees have stringer?
