her and present her with a Card, Chocolates & a Bunch of Flowers.

Ballyfermot College Radio and Degree student featured in Irish Times

Ballyfermot College Radio Programming & Production and Podcasting student Donal Mulvey has been featured in
a very interesting article in the Irish Times. Donal talks about his journey worldwide including managing as an
English editor TTXVN – the official state news agency based in Hanoi Vietnam. The Vietnam news agency
operates over 60 bureaus in Vietnam and 30 globally and has over 400 radio and TV stations and 1,000 reporters
under its umbrella.”

Donal told journalist Barbara McCarthy of The Irish Times “I worked there for two years looking after . . . news
products, including TV, magazines, mobile platforms and websites belonging to the group.”

Donal did the 2-year HND Radio Programming Podcasting Production course and then Media Management
Degree 1 year top up. BCFE Radio students are in many places across Asia, especially in Korea where we have
strong links and students are working in Media and Teaching Media. The radio course also has fully funded
Erasmus placements in Radio stations in Malta, Alicante and Finland.

Well done to Donal, we are all truly very envious of him!

International Radio Award nomination for BCFE Radio assignment that became RTE Radio Doc on 1

Photo Nathan Walsh

Nathan Walsh studied the 2 year HND Radio and then the Final Year Media Management Production
Degree in BCFE.

Nathan has now made two Radio Documentaries for the RTE Radio Doc on 1.

The latter “The Deadly Saris” started as a project used in radio assessments and evolved to his second
RTE Doc on 1.

Now in what is an award in itself, it has been chosen as a finalist at the prestigious New York Radio
Festival competition.

The 2021 award night takes place at National Association of Broadcasters Show will be held October 9
- 13, at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

Nathan tells us” It’s kind of surreal to have a documentary that began life as an assignment for BCFE
now become a Documentary on One production that will be heard around the world. Radha and
Helen are both great fun though, and their story is quite an adventure, so it’s great that the wider
public will now have an opportunity to hear it. And of course, without the amazing teaching and
support from Bernard, Simon, Brian, Orla and all of the other tutors at Ballyfermot College of Further
Education, it would never have happened.”

Congratulations to Nathan for already outstanding achievements and best of luck for
October in Las Vegas.

BCFE Radio Jobs Treble. Niall Boylan Show, Classic Hits, NewsTalk Domino Effect

Congratulations on some very recent appointments of former radio students.

The Team just recruited 3 current radio students for paid work in the station and show
Domino Effect 1 – Helena O’Toole

Helena O’Toole was Senior producer of the Niall Boylan Talk Show on Classic Hits, she
recently left to become producer of NewsTalk Breakfast with Shane Coleman & Ciara Kelly.

This effectively means the whole day’s output of Newstalk has BCFE students involved at
producer or senior producer role.

Helena was a very regular visitor and recruiter of BCFE Radio students since she graduated.
Helena had been Senior Producer of the Niall Boylan Show as it won national and
international radio awards. She had been first recruited by Niall for work experience at a
talk he was giving to the radio students.
Helena O’Toole Left & Aisling Lynch Right

Domino Effect 2 – Aisling Lynch

The role of Senior Producer which was then taken over by recently graduated Radio and
then Degree student, Aisling Lynch. The extremely talented all-rounder Aisling had been
producer of the show and was then promoted to the role of Senior Producer.
Aisling is a highly gifted broadcaster and can regularly be heard on air during the show too.

Domino Effect 3 - Ruth Abbott

With Aisling becoming Senior Producer, the role of Producer now being vacant, was then
filled by former radio and then degree student Ruth Abbott. Ruth had first started doing
work experience on the show and then started being employed as a part time producer for
cover work, before now being made producer in her own right. Ruth is also a very talented
presenter and can also be heard on air too. When we remember her 21 st birthday
celebrations being snuck into a radio networking class we were doing just over a year ago
and add to that the fact she only graduated weeks ago from BCFE, it suggests Ruth is already
off to a head start.

All very talented people and we miss them all in the college and huge congratulations to all.
All of these former and indeed some current students can be frequently heard on air on The
Niall Boylan Talk Show on Classic Hits from 10:20pm - 11pm Monday to Thursday.
Michaela Hayes iRadio Music PD & Documentary Maker

Former Radio Student Michaela Hayes, iRadio Music PD & Documentary Maker Talk and
Recruitment Drive
Michaela Hayes did the BCFE radio course and the degree 10 years ago.
Since then she worked on a Number of Radio Stations including NOVA and then iRadio.

Michaela is in iRadio where many former BCFE Radio students are in management & on air.
Michaela is also the stations Music Director, making her Irelands first female Music PD.
Michaela also just had her Documentary commissioned with Sound and Vision funding.
The documentary called IBD & I, tracks her personal Journey through Chrons Disease.

Michaela fondly reminisced about her time on the BCFE Radio course and gave strong advice
and contacts for getting into the industry.

Michaela also recruited BCFE students for work, for on air work on her new night time show,
just as she had done last year to work with her for her IBD & I documentary.

Very positive for BCFE and iRadio, is that from former students are in management and from
most of the day on IRadio you could hear ex BCFE radio students back to back.

station in the World, BBC Radio 1 FM. Jessica has her own show on TODAY FM. Whilst still
on the MRH Radio course Jessica became a Producer on Spin 103.8 and then joined 98FM &
Today FM.

“Since I graduated September 2018, I have been able to use all of the skills that I got from my
MRH Radio Course to help me progress in the industry. The 3 years I spent in BCFE on the
MRH Radio Course and the BAMPM Degree helped me to open up as a person and meet and
network with new people. Having lecturers that have worked in the industry was such a huge
advantage and really prepared me for what was to come”

Programme which airs each weekday at 10am on BBC Two Television. Simon is also a
producer for Sky News and Channel 4 News. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07tcsfv

“I really found my feet during the two-year radio course as it was so hands on and practical.
The lecturers are so encouraging and supportive of work placements and they have the
network to help you get your foot in the door of Ireland’s biggest broadcasters. It’s so
important to put the theory learnt in lectures into practice in the workplace as it’s the only
way to get a start in the industry. Ballyfermot are so encouraging of this and I’ll always be
forever grateful for their drive to get me into the workplace.

At that time, I knew absolutely no one in the industry and I had very little experience in

to get my foot in the door and I can't recommend this college highly enough”
