COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the students to the basic concepts and vital elements of politics and
governance from a historical-institutional perspective. In particular, it attempts to explain how
the important features of our country’s political structures/institutions, processes, and
relationships developed across time. In the process, the course helps the learners gain a better
appreciation of their rights and responsibilities as individuals and as members of the larger
sociopolitical community to strengthen their civic competence.

Course Competencies

At the end of this course, students will be able to:


a. Critically understand key concepts in the study of politics in order to generate a coherent,
rigorous, and substantive analysis of contemporary political life.
b. Maintain a mastery of these concepts in order to recognize the way that politics operates
in their own academic discipline. Subsequently, this requires that students recognize the
way that the political operates in everyday life.
c. Value the key concepts learned in such a way that these same concepts can be used
properly in different contexts. Students are also expected to be able to exemplify and
justify their involvement in communal and political life.

Grading System and Requirements

Students will be evaluated based on the following areas. Note that timely submission of
the assignments and projects determine whether they get points for them or not. Failure to take
the major exams on the date specified including inability to submit requirements would mean a
grade of Fail. Special exams will only be given ONCE to students who were able to take at least
2 major exams successfully and with complete compilation of assignments and projects submitted
on time. The student must obtain at least 75% to pass the course.

The Midterm course grade shall be 1/3 of the Prelim and 2/3 of the
Midterm grade. The Final Course grade shall be 1/3 of the Midterm and 2/3
of the Final course grades.

Classroom Attendance – It is the responsibility of everybody to come to class on time


Policies and on schedule. Attendance will be checked regularly. Students who will
incur absences exceeding the allowed number of absences as stipulated in the
student handbook will be dropped from the roll or will be given a failing
grade.

Cellphone and other electronic gadgets – Using cellphones, laptops and


other similar gadgets during class sessions are strongly discouraged.
Everyone is expected to demonstrate respect to everyone and avoid
disruptive behaviors.

Make-up Exam/Quizzes – Make-up exams/quizzes will not be given to the


students EXCEPT for serious illness or death in the family, or for other
reasonable grounds.

Academic Integrity – Everyone is expected to maintain academic integrity at


all times. Avoid cheating during exams, quizzes, and assignment. Plagiarism
will not be tolerated. In every academic paper that the students will submit,
authors and references MUST be cited properly. Claiming something as
his/her own when actually one has copied it is a clear VIOLATION.

Major Examination

There will be three (3) major examinations, to wit: preliminary, midterm and final which
shall be taken within semester. Each major examination shall consist at least 50 items and shall
cover all the topics that have been discussed during such term. However, comprehensive
examination on all topics that have been discussed during the semester may be given during final
examination.

Quizzes

There will be quizzes (probably one every end topic). Quizzes will relate to current and
previous topics. A quiz may be given any time during any class period -immediately after the
lecture, at the beginning or end of class. Make-up exams/quizzes will not be given to the students
EXCEPT for serious illness or death in the family, or for other reasonable grounds.
