Guidelines:

Make sure you have completed the assessments on pages 4-19 in your copy of “Get a job”
workbook before attempting this exercise.

In paragraph format, answer the following questions:

1. Introduce yourself (Tell me a little bit about yourself, your academic background etc.)

Ans: I am Harmanveer Singh from the heart of India i.e. Punjab. I came here in Canada after I
passed my 12th grade with flying colors under science stream. Additionally, since beginning I’m
a kind of character who has numerous fields of interests and like doing almost each and
everything whether it is studying, sports and at the top most painting. There are so many other
things that would take an ample amount of time and my lines to describe here. In short I’m
versatile and an introvert kind of person.

2. Why did you choose this area/program of study?

Ans: Working on the computer is my favorite pastime. Since I was fifteen, I've been
experimenting with programming, creating simple websites and games. I did well and enjoyed
the process, which encouraged me to continue my education in this subject and hopefully land a
job with a similar organization. I believe that we should work at what we enjoy for a living. And
because I adore computing, a diploma in computer science was a natural decision. To be honest,
computer games are the foremost reason that why I chose computer systems technician. So let
me tell you, I started playing computer games and wanted to learn how to make them myself.
Although I did not pursue a career in videogame development, my interest in computers and how
to solve different problems influenced me to study more about it and opt it as a career. There is
variety of other reasons which influenced me to get into this field. I assumed that because it is
constantly developing, it would be a career that would keep me interested and challenging.
In addition, I was aware that there was high demand, meaning that I would be able to get work
very easily and with great salary in this field. More than that, this field is a good fit for my
introverted personality and analytical abilities. I've always been good at math, and writing code
for school assignments was very interesting thing for me to do. I've always preferred spending
time alone, working on the internet or watching documentaries. I simply cannot imagine
studying anything else because this subject is such a good fit for my skills and personality.
Finally, it's a good career. These little things piqued my interest, so I went into the field where I
could learn and study more about computer and as now I am studying my way up to be an
engineer. I enjoy what I study, and the fact that I can make a nice living doing it makes it even
better. I am really sure that my problem solving skills would always motivate me to complete
every difficult task as a challenge.
3. What will a potential employer find attractive about your current or past
accomplishments and/or education?

Ans: Employers are most curious in seeing if the content you've listed on your resume about
your qualifications, experience, and past positions resembles what you've mentioned on your
resume. Nearly half of hiring managers want to know if a prospect is innovative. So if I talk
about myself my experience in working as part of a team in the past and my willingness to work
as part of a team in the future can be among the most attractive things about you in applying for a
job. Competence is terribly important to our success. It is really the foundation of everything that
happens to you in your career. The ability to adapt is a desirable trait among employers.
Demonstrate to them that you are capable of handling tasks and adjustments as they arise. I can
also demonstrate my ability by identifying areas for improvement and developing systems or
solutions to the problems.

4. List your top 5 marketable skills, related to your area of study and give at least one
example of how you have put each of them to practice. (You can include your transferable skills
and technical skills.)

Ans: My five top skills are:

1. Public speaking
2. Supervision
3. Photography
4. Motivating people
5. Creating content

1.Public speaking
Situation: It was the time when I was in grade 10, and a speech competition was held in my
school. Each and every class teacher has to select atleast two students for the speech competition.
However, I was not interested in such competition. Because I was so shy to speak in front of the
audience, And I was under confident as well. But my class teacher had faith on me that I can
speak in front of the audience. she was encouraging me to participate in the competition, but I
was still not convinced. however, one of my friends was participating in that competition , so I
got a little bit of motivation to participate in the speech competition and I made my name got
written in participants’ list.
Task: the task was given to each individual was that the party spent has to speak for at least 15
minutes on a public welfare topic such as drug abuse. I choose the topic on “child labour”. The
speech should be presented in such a way that no one can feel bored as it has to includes
intonations of voice and body actions.
Action: on the day of the competition, I was extremely nervous to perform as there were so many
people in front of me. He was literally shivering and felt numb for a while. however, I gained my
confidence and started speaking. I was so much boosted that I spoke fluently and impressively.
Result: The judges were very impressed with my performance, and I got second position in the
competition.

2.Supervision
Situation: in December, when there was a heavy snow in Canada, my line leader in the factory
got stucked because of the snow. So, there was no one to lead the team. As I was a 6 month old
employee in that factory, my supervisor asked me to manage and supervise the line, so the work
can be done fluently and without any hurdle.
Task: my task was that I had to operate the machines, so the workers can cut and chop the
vegetables in that machines because all the workers were new and did not know that how to
operate the machines.
Action: I was taking the machines from a special room where all machines were kept, and I was
setting the blade size so I can get the desired shape of cut vegetables. I was also teaching the new
people that how to manage the machine well. the supervisor was supervising me that how I am
performing . he was so impressed with my performance because I finished the work in 7 hours
instead of 8 hours.
Result: the supervisor was so happy that he promoted me from a general labour to lead hand’s
assistant.

3.Photography
Situation: I went on a trip with my friends when I was in my school. We went to Himachal
Pradesh. We all friends had a bet with each other that who can click the best pictures, and
whoever wins would get a party.
Task: I had to click 5 beautiful pictures of nature in just 30 minutes.
Action: I went to the most beautiful spots of the area, and started clicking pictures with my High
Definition (HD) camera. I clicked over 40 pictures in the given time slot. I chose best five
pictures to present in front of my friends.
Result: All of my friends were very amazed with my photography, and I won the bet.

4.Motivating people
Situation: My friend was so confused after the completion of his 10th class that what subject he
should choose. His parents were asking him to opt Science, but he was interested in Arts.
However, he was not encouraged to tell his interests to his parents.
Task: I was encouraging him to have a conversation related to his interests about studies. I gave
him so many examples of people who chose Arts and are successful.
Action: my friend got encouraged, and went to his parents to speak about hi situation. They had a
long conversation, finally his parents got convinced.
Result: My friend was so happy, and thanked me.

5.Creating content
Situation: It was the same time when I had create an essay by myself for the speech competition.
The class teacher asked that the content should not be more formal and boring, so the public
loses interest int listening it.
Task: As I had to speak for 15 minutes for the speech competition, the content should be lengthy
and interesting as well.
Action: honestly, I took the help of internet just to look at the major points which should not be
missed. Then, I created a 4 pages essay which included my personal life experiences.
Result: I spoke in such a way that my content which I created did not appeal as boring, and
public was impressed by my content which I created for the competition.

5. What is your biggest career aspiration (now or for future)?

Ans: Taking ownership of your own growth, focusing on small, gradual improvements in your
abilities and knowledge, and remaining consistent and committed to your current work day in
and day out are all ways to reach your career goals. Moreover, if you want to be something from
the field in which you have a great interest, it means you are on the right track and no one would
stop you to accomplish that goal because of your interest and hard work and as I explained
before from beginning I have a keen interest in computer field. My career aspiration to continue
my studies and conduct research in the field of computer science stems from my academic
experiences, job practices, and home environment, which has always encouraged me to learn and
make my own decisions. As I mentioned earlier, my primary areas of interest in school were
math, science, and computer science. My long-term ambition is to do research in the field of
computer science and to invent new solutions and applications in this sector that benefit society.
My goal in becoming a computer scientist is to join a team of talented experts that can combine
mathematical analysis, logical cogency, and ingenuity to design elegant solutions that can be
used to solve complicated issues using abstractions, paying attention to details, and hidden
assumptions. I want to work with clients as a partner, advising them on how to use information
technology to achieve their company goals or solve challenges. Since I am still an undergraduate
student, achieving this objective will be a long process, but every long journey begins with a
single step. It is a difficult and technical goal, but it is one that I am passionate about because it is
my dream. After that, I want to start my own software firm with a group of specialists, which I
will lead as CEO.
