Linear Linear Equations

Equations in A linear equation is an algebraic equation with a degree of 1. This

means that the highest exponent on any variable in the equation is 1.
One Variable A linear equation in one variable can be written in the form

ax +b = c , where: a, b, and c are real numbers

General guidelines for solving linear equations in one variable:
Equations in 1. Simplify anything inside brackets.
One Variable 2. Get rid of any brackets using the distributive property:
a(b+c) = ab + ac
3. Collect like terms.
4. Isolate the unknown variable by moving all other terms to the other
side of the equation. To move a term across the equal sign, do the
opposite operation on the other side. Addition → subtraction;
subtraction → addition; multiplication → division; division →
multiplication.

Definitions: Polynomial

A polynomial is an expression involving the sum of powers in

one or more variables multiplied by coefficients. A polynomial in one
variable is the sum of terms of the form 𝑎𝑥 𝑘 ,where a is called the
coefficient, is a real number and k is a non-negative integer.

Applications 𝒂𝒙𝒌 + 𝒂𝒙𝒌−𝟏 + 𝒂𝒙𝒌−𝟐 + ⋯ + 𝒂𝒙𝟎

Definitions: Monomial, Binomial and Trinomial

Each product in a polynomial is called a term. Polynomials are

named according to the number of terms: monomials have exactly 1
term, binomials have exactly 2 terms, and trinomials have exactly 3
terms.

The exponent of a term is the degree of the term, and the greatest
exponent in a polynomial is the degree of the polynomial.

Quadratic
Equations and
Recall: The different concepts on factoring

Example
Applications 1. Suppose we wish to solve 3𝑥 3 = 27. We begin by writing this in the
standard form of a quadratic equation by subtracting 27 from
each side to give 3𝑥 3 − 27 = 0

We now look for common factors. By observation there is a common

factor of 3 in both terms. This factor is extracted and written outside a
pair of brackets. The contents of the brackets are adjusted
accordingly:

Quadratic
A quadratic function can have one real zero, two real zeros, or at
Equations and times, no real zeros.

Applications Note :
✓ You can use the part of the Quadratic Formula underneath
the square root symbol to identify the number of real zeros or
roots. Because this portion of the formula “discriminates” the
number of real zeros or roots, it is called the discriminant.
✓ If the discriminant is a perfect square, then the roots are
rational.
✓ If the discriminant is not a perfect square, then the roots are
irrational

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Numbers and ✓ If you use the u substitution, you must substitute back to the original
other types variable. So, if the original problem is in terms of x, make sure that your
answer is also in terms of x.
of Equations ✓ Although you can raise both sides of an equation to the same power
without changing the solutions, you can NOT raise each term to the same
power.

✓ Remember that whenever you have the even root of a positive number,
we get two answers: one positive and one negative. For example, if 𝑥 4 =
16 then by taking the 4th root of both sides we get x =2 AND x = −2. Do
NOT forget the negative answer when working with even roots.

other types ✓ Do NOT attach a ± when working with odd roots. When you take the odd
of Equations root of a number, you get only one solution.

✓ Make sure that the variable is isolated before raising both sides to the
same power. For example,
2 3
(4𝑥 ) ≠ 4𝑥
3 2

3. Solving Radical Equations

Complex
Numbers and ✓ Solving equations requires isolation of the variable. Equations that

other types contain a variable inside of a radical require algebraic manipulation of

the equation so that the variable “comes out” from underneath the

of Equations radical(s).
✓ This can be accomplished by raising both sides of the equation to the
“nth” power, where n is the “index” or “root” of the radical.
✓ When the index is a 2 (i.e. a square root), we call this method “squaring
both sides.”
✓ Sometimes the equation may contain more than one radical
expression, and it is possible that the method may need to be used
more than once to solve it.

Complex
Numbers and General Solution Steps:

other types Step 1. Isolate the Radical(s) and identify the index (n).

of Equations Step 2. Raise both sides of the equation to the “nth” power.

Step 3. Use algebraic techniques (i.e. factoring, combining like terms,…)

to isolate the variable. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if necessary.

Step 4. Check answers. Eliminate any extraneous solutions from the final
answer.

Numbers and ✓ Recall that you can solve equations containing fractions
by using the least common denominator of all the
other types fractions in the equation.

of Equations ✓ Multiplying each side of the equation by the common

denominator eliminates the fractions.

✓ This method can also be used with rational equations.

✓ Rational equations are equations containing rational

expressions.

other types 1. Isolate the absolute value.

2. Identify what the isolated absolute value is set equal to…
of Equations ✓ If the absolute value is set equal to zero, remove absolute value symbols
& solve the equation to get one solution.
✓ If the absolute value is set equal to a negative number, there is no
solution.
✓ If the absolute value is set equal to a positive number, set the argument
(expression within the absolute value) equal to the number and set it
equal to the opposite of the number, using an ‘or’ statement in
between the two equations. Then solve each equation separately to
get two solutions.
