Linear Equations
Linear
General guidelines for solving linear equations in one variable:
Equations in 1. Simplify anything inside brackets.
One Variable 2. Get rid of any brackets using the distributive property:
a(b+c) = ab + ac
3. Collect like terms.
4. Isolate the unknown variable by moving all other terms to the other
side of the equation. To move a term across the equal sign, do the
opposite operation on the other side. Addition → subtraction;
subtraction → addition; multiplication → division; division →
multiplication.

Quadratic Equations
Quadratic A polynomial is written in general form when the terms are in
Equations and descending order, starting with the term with the greatest degree and
ending with the term with the least degree.
Applications 𝒂𝒙𝒌 + 𝒂𝒙𝒌−𝟏 + 𝒂𝒙𝒌−𝟐 + ⋯ + 𝒂𝒙𝟎
The exponent of a term is the degree of the term, and the greatest
exponent in a polynomial is the degree of the polynomial.

Applications Note :
✓ You can use the part of the Quadratic Formula underneath
the square root symbol to identify the number of real zeros or
roots. Because this portion of the formula “discriminates” the
number of real zeros or roots, it is called the discriminant.
✓ If the discriminant is a perfect square, then the roots are
rational.
✓ If the discriminant is not a perfect square, then the roots are
irrational

✓ Zero Product Property: If a and b are real numbers and a · b = 0, then
a = 0 or b = 0. If you recognize how the expression factors in its original
form, then do so. If not, then use a u substitution to create a
quadratic that is easier to factor. For example, for 𝒙𝟒 + 𝟓𝒙𝟐 𝟔, if we let
𝒖 = 𝒙𝟐 then we have

✓ Remember that whenever you have the even root of a positive number,
we get two answers: one positive and one negative. For example, if 𝑥 4 =
16 then by taking the 4th root of both sides we get x =2 AND x = −2. Do
NOT forget the negative answer when working with even roots.

Solving a Linear Inequality
Inequalities ✓ Solve a linear inequality just like a linear equation, by performing operations to
both sides of the inequality in order to isolate the variable.
in one ✓ The only difference is that when dividing or multiplying both sides of the
inequality by a negative number, the direction of the inequality changes (i.e. if
Variable starting with > 𝑜𝑟 < 𝑠𝑤𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑜 ≤ 𝑜𝑟 ≥, and visa versa).
