Week 2 Live Lecture

Forced Vibrations: Constant Loads

Structural Dynamics,
Advanced Structural Analysis
Dr Glen Cooper

Please Remember that teaching will work through…

Each Week (Week 1-5) there will be a live lecture through blackboard

There will also be video lecture material in blackboard

– ideally you will have watched this before
the live lecture each week.

Some weeks there will also be tutorial questions

Example Step Constant Load

What happens if we apply a
constant load to a damped
system?

Constant Force Vibration?

… or even better a problem for

you to do…

Q1. What is the equation of motion?

Q2. What is the equation for displacement?
Q3. How long does it take to complete 5 cycles of
vibration?
Q4. What is the amplitude of vibration after 5 cycles?

Undamped Harmonic Loading

Vibration is about energy transfer (strain energy to kinetic energy)

In free vibration situations energy is conserved in the system:-

𝟏 𝟏
𝑲𝑬 = 𝟐 𝒎𝒗𝟐 and 𝐒𝐄 = 𝟐 𝒌𝒙𝟐 so 𝑲𝑬𝒎𝒂𝒙 = 𝑺𝑬𝒎𝒂𝒙

Harmonic Force Vibration?

What about an example…

Example
Industrial buildings often have suspended floors and machinery is
placed on top of this. In this case a large rotating machine with a
mass of 2 tonnes is placed on the floor and creates a static
deflection of 1.8mm. During operation the machine generates an
out of balance force of 5kN at an operating speed of 1200rpm.
Assuming a damping ratio of 3% calculate the resulting steady state
vibration amplitude of the floor.

What should you do now?

If you have had any problems so far please go back and watch the
previous videos/review the lecture notes/examples

A new topic will be released tomorrow (Friday each week) – please try
to watch these videos and look at the material before the next live
lecture on Thursday next week (Week 3 topic will be impulse loading)

Thank you for listening
