COMMUNICATION MODES

COMMUNICATION MODES refers to the channel through which one express his/her
communicative intent. It is a medium through which one conveys his/her thoughts. Views or
feelings can be communicated through face-to-face interaction, video, audio, and text-based.

Face-to-face Interaction – It is an informal or casual conversation between two or more

people. People engage in social conversations to establish
relationships or maintain them.

“Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters” – Dau Voire

“All social changes begin with a conversation” – Margaret J. Whaetly

Video – A convenient communication for people who want to reach out to each other
despite
Distance. Web cameras are used so that two or more people who cannot interact
face-
to-face to communicate.
Audio –
Audio means
transmitted sound. In this mode of communication, only the voice of
speaker is heard.

Text-based – This communication mode does not originally provide video or audio
benefits;
it has a wider reach and can disseminate information to a bigger audience
quickly.

COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY

COMMUNICATION IN SOCIAL MEDIA

There are various modes through which we communicate with each other. In the past,
these modes took the form of handwritten messages, typewritten messages, short telegrams,
computer-encoded texts, as well as landline telephone conversations, and audio/video-recorded
messages.

Pinoy Top Media Users (Miguel R. Camus, 2017)

1. Filipinos spend more time on social media sites than anyone else in the world, going
online roughly four hours and 17 minutes a day, according to a report released on
Tuesday.
2. Filipinos spend most of their online time sites such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter,
said the report, called Digital in 2007, and prepared by social media platform Hootsuite
and United Kingdom-based consultancy We Are Social Ltd.

Us Among Bottom Half

3. "Filipinos like to keep in touch," Isberto said.
4. The Philippines' social media usage was in stark contrast to its internet speed, Fixed-
broadband speed here is among the slowest in Asia-Pacific, while mobile connections are
among the fastest, according to the most recent Akamai report.

5. The fastest was South Korea, with 26.3 mbps, and its citizens just spend about 1 hour and
11 minutes a day on social media.

Internet use on the Rise

6. According to the report, the Philippines' internet and social media users grew by over 25
percent, up 13 million and 12 million over last year, respectively.
7. The Philippines, so far, had a social media penetration rate of 58 percent, higher than the
average of 47 percent in Southeast Asia.

Digital Connectivity
8. The total internet penetration rate stood at 50 percent, or 3.77 billion people, the report
showed.
VALUING Did you understand our
(5 minutes) topic for today?
Yes, ma’am!
Good! Now I would like to
ask you a question. Which
of the four modes of
communication must you
prefer, and why?
Ma’am, I prefer face-to-face
interaction because it allows
for a better exchange of
information since both
speaker and listener are able
to see and interpret body
language and facial

communication because, now
that there is a pandemic, we
can't go wherever we want
due to social distancing and
health protocols. It can
increase productivity, save
time, cut travel costs, and
promote overall collaboration
without requiring constant

of the different
communication modes in
our lives.

Another question, Is social

media good or bad for you?

Ma'am, social media is

beneficial to me if I use it
responsibly. As a student, it is
frequently easier and more
convenient to access
information, provide

responsible helps us to be
more aware of what we are
doing. To be a responsible
user, we need to be careful
in posting personal hints to
avoid privacy invasion, to
protect our private accounts
and for us to be safe.

G. Making Generalization In overall, what have you

(2 minutes) learned about our lesson
today?
Ma’am, I have learned that the
communication modes help in
maintaining a smoother flow
for conveying information.
Very good! Being able to
communicate effectively is
perhaps the most important
of all life skills. It is what
enables us to pass
information to other people
and to understand what is
said to us.

H. Application Now that you have

(15 minutes) understood our lesson for
today, we will have our final
activity.

Let us put your acting skills

to the test this time by
creating a 5 minutes role-
play video presentation and
uploading it to Google
Classroom. I will divide you
into five groups with
different scenarios and
instructions.

I will give you 10 minutes

to prepare and another 5
minutes to perform.

Group 1. Face-to-face
Interaction

Scenario: You saw a

classmate outside the
school, but you don't know
each other very well. You
wanted to ask about the
classes you missed and how
you cope with the lessons.
How are you going to start a
conversation with them
without being awkward?

Group 2. Video
(Messenger Video Call)

Scenario: Record a video

using a messenger app or
another electronic
application that allows
video calls. Start discussing
a specific project in your
purposive communication
subject with your
groupmates. Your task is to
create a roleplay about a
talk show with the theme of
"HIV Awareness."
Group 3. Audio (Phone
Call)
Scenario: Record a video
while talking on the phone
with a classmate about the
upcoming Foundation Day
event. You will contact your
classmates and persuade
them to participate in the
Cheer dance competition or
another school dance/sports
competition.

Group 4. Text-based

(Screen Mirroring)
Scenario: Start a
conversation with three
foreigners about the "new
normal in education during
the pandemic crisis" on the
Facebook Messenger app Yes, ma’am!
and record it using screen
mirroring.
Group 5. Social Media

Scenario: Create a role-play

that demonstrates the
advantages and
disadvantages of using
social media.

Here are the criteria.

CRITERIA
Content 25%
Creativity 20%
Clarity 20%
Mastery 20%
Video 15%
