TYPES OF QUESTIONS

1. GENERAL QUESTION (загальне питання) – питання, на яке можна відповісти «так» або

ж «ні». Загальне питання формується за допомогою інверсії (непрямого порядку
слів): допоміжні дієслова ставляться перед підметом на початок речення.
 May  I  stay? 
 Did you go to Mark’s party yesterday? 

Вибір допоміжного дієслова залежить від граматичного часу в реченні.

 Do you play the piano? – (Present Simple)
 Are Kate and Jack working now? – (Present Continuous)
 Will you be free tomorrow morning? – (Future Simple)

2. SPECIAL QUESTION (спеціальне питання) – вид питання, який використовується для

отримання додаткової конкретної інформації. (W + H-questions – What \ Where \ Who \ When
\ Whose \ Whom \ How?)
 What was that?
 Where are we going now?
 How do you say it in English?

3. ALTERNATIVE QUESTION (альтернативне питання) – питання, яке дає вибір між

декількома варіантами. (or-questions)
 Do you want some coffee, tea or just water?
 Do Mark and Daniel live in New York or in Washington?
 Will you buy this little black dress or those blue jeans?

4. DISJUNCTIVE QUESTION (розділове питання) – особливий вид питань, що складається

з розповідного речення (стверджувального або ж заперечного) та короткого загального
питання.
Якщо розділове питання починається зі стверджувальної частини, то питальна частина
буде обов'язково в заперечній формі.
 Claus can swim, can’t he? – Клаус вміє плавати, чи не так?
 You play the piano, don’t you? – Ти граєш на роялі, правда?
 Children have already done your homework, haven’t they? – Діти вже виконали своє
домашнє завдання, чи не так?
Якщо розділове питання починається з розповідної частини в заперечній формі, то питальна
частина буде стояти обов'язково в стверджувальній формі.
 Kate isn’t sad, is she? – Кейт не сумна, чи не так?
 You didn’t know this, did you? – Ти цього не знав, правда?
 We won’t go to the seaside next weekend, will we? – Ми не поїдемо до моря на
наступних вихідних, так?

5. NEGATIVE QUESTION (заперечне питання) - питання, часто загальне, що починається з

дієслова в заперечній формі.
 Shouldn't you go to school now? – Чи не повинен ти йти зараз до школи?
 Aren't you tired?
 Should you not go to school now?
 Have you not a friend in England?

Make questions from the answers.

2. It was very cold there. (Yes)

Make alternative questions.
1. He is in the swimming pool (in the kindergarten).
Is he in the swimming pool or in the kindergarten?
2. He has gone to the swimming pool (to the library).
3. He has got a new computer game (a new book).
4. It’s cold (hot).
5. He has been to Spain (to Italy).
6. He is visiting Spain (Germany).
7. She wrote the exercise (the story).
8. She is writing the exercise (the translation).
9. She has gone to school (to work).
10. She is at school (at the spots ground)

Make questions. Choose the groups of them.
1. Somebody brought a dog to the kitchen.
Who brought a dog to the kitchen? (general question)
2. Linda brought something interesting.
What did Linda bring? (special question)
3. Somebody is cleaning the floor.
4. She is doing something.
5. Somebody cooked porridge for us.
6. Granny cooked something nice.
7. Somebody found the tickets yesterday.
8. He found something yesterday.
9. Something helped him.
10. Tom helped somebody.

Make questions to the answers. Choose the group of them.
1. You live in a big house.
Where do you live?

4. She will take this book from the library tomorrow.
