1. Purpose
The purpose of Mock-up of Trafficability Layer is as followings:
1) Determination of the height of the trafficability layer(for trafficability of 60 ton dump
trailer) and the optimal Roller compaction count through mock-up testing with approved
materials that meet the Requirement by Material Specification And Employer’s
Requirements-Volume 2 as per point 4.3.2 of Section 2 : Roads specifications
2) It is possible to calculate the thickness of the trafficability layer to withstand earthmoving
heavy equipments like dump trailer.

2. Mock-up date and location


1) Mock up date :
① STA. 54+000 : 1th Oct to 10th Oct
② STA. 56+500 : As per construction schedule
2) Mock-up location( Accessible points)
① Fourth Mock-up point is the immersed tunnel west (STA. 54+000)
② Fifth Mock-up point is the low water level (STA. 56+500)
③ It has been zoning as below.

1) Material Type
The materials to be used during the mock-up test will use Silty Sandy Soil that meet the
approved material specifications.

2) Material Source

: 118,800 m3

- STA. 54+000 ~ STA. 56+500 : 36m x 0.9m x 2,500m = 81,000 m3

- STA. 56+500 ~ STA. 61+000 : 36m x 0.3m x 3,500m = 37,800 m3

6. Sample & Field Test Plan


1) Laboratory activities
① Lab testing: Granular materials
- Sieve test, as per BS 1377:Part1, 2
- Modified Proctor curve, as per BS1377:Part 4
2) Field Test
- Field Density Test, as per BS 1377: Part 9
- Field California Bearing Ratio, as per BS 1377: Part 7 and ASTM D4429
- Plate Load Test, as per BS 1377: Part 9
- Check elevation each Section
- Trafficability test by using 60ton dump trailer each Section
3) Quality control
- One NRI for the lab tests on granular materials
- One NRI for the survey(elevation) of each compacted lift of each Section
- One NRI for the survey(elevation) of each Section
- One NRI for the survey(trafficability test) of each Section
- One NRI for the field tests done on a given test elevation and Section

7. Mock-up Test

1) Layout for Construction


The mockup test consists of: Three sections of sandy soil. The three sections of each
material are 0.6m, 0.9m and 1.2m in compacted height and 35m in length.

2) Sequence for Determination of trafficability layer height and optimal number of roller
counts(Purpose 1)
The following sequence as shown to determine the height of trafficability and the optimal
number of compactions. The sequence below shows the types of tests and location to be
performed in each of the three section. The levels indicated in Fig4 are before compaction.
After the compaction by 13%, i.e, 0.6m, 0.9m and 1.2m.(loose material thickness 0.68m,
1.02m, 1.36m)

3) Construction Method for Mock-up Test


① Dumping
At the stockpile area excavator will load the material to dump truck and this material will be
dumped to mock up area.

② Pouring out and Pushing


Material will be dumped and it will be pushed by dozer.

③ Watering
Water Tank will pour proper water for the better compaction.

④ Compaction
Layer will be compacted by Vibration Roller.
