I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

 Illustrate the Pythagorean theorem;

 solve equation using the Pythagorean theorem;
 give importance on Pythagorean theorem in solving real-life problems.

Content Standard

The learners demonstrates understanding on Pythagorean theorem.

Learning Competency

The learners are able to solve equation in solving real-life problems using Pythagorean
theorem.

II. Subject Matter

A. Motivation

 Greetings

The teacher will greet the learners a good day.

 Ice-breaker

The teacher will let the students do a warm up to inactive the body.

B. Daily Rotine

 Prayer

The teacher will let a learner lead the prayer.

 Checking of attendance
The teacher will check the presence of the learners.

C. Lesson Proper

As we all know, a theorem is a statement that follows logically from other statements
known or assumed to be true. The Pythagorean theorem is the most famous theorem in all
geometry. This theorem was known to the ancient Chinese and ancient Egyptians. But it gets its
name from the Greek mathematician Pythagoras. Pythagoras was born about 572 B.C. He and
his followers may have been the first people in the Western World to know that this amazing
theorem is true for any right triangle.

Caution: The Pythagorean Theorem only works for right triangles. It does not work for any
other triangles.

The Pythagorean Theorem is a formula relating the lengths of the three sides of a right
triangle.

Let the legs of a right triangle have lengths a

and b.
a c
Let the hypotenuse have lengths c.

Then, a2 + b2 = c2.

Example 1.

What is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle drawn below?

15

11

Solution: To answer this question, use the formula of the Pythagorean Theorem. From the
formula, c2 = a2 + b2

So c2 = 11 squared + 15 squared
c2= 121 + 225

c2= 346

And the square root of 346 is 18.60.

Check: Draw right triangle with legs 11 and 15 units. Then measure the hypotenuse. It should
be about 18.60 units.

Example 2.

The bottom of a 12 foot ladder is 3 feet from a wall. How high up does the top of the
ladder touch the wall? Explain and show your solution.

Example 3.

The bottom of a 3 meter tree is 1 meter away from a wall. How high up on the wall will
the tree reach? Explain and show your solution.

 Activity

The teacher will divide the class into two and give 5 - 10 minutes time then let the learners
brainstorm and solve Example number 2 and Example 3 in a paper.

 Analysis

The teacher will have two person in each group to solve the problems.

 Abstraction

The teacher will now demonstrate the correct answer and will discuss another problem set to
the learners.

 Application

The teacher will give time to the learners to practice more problem set.

IV. Evaluation

The teacher will let the learners to perform in front solving different real-life problems
using Pythagorean theorem.

V. Assignment
The teacher will tell the learners to study and practice at home the lesson learned about
the Pythagorean theorem then let them give their insights about the usefulness of Pythagorean
theorem in real-life problem.
