8 Teaching and The Communicative approach of English Language teaching is used, which
learning methods employs a variety of different methods and techniques, all based around the
principle of the students acquiring language by guided self-discovery and
practicing in activities which require communication.
The course is practical, interactive and is conducted in English. Classes are
learner- centred, communicative where participants can engage with English to
acquire the skills and competencies they need to study at university. The priority
is given to the integration and development of four language skills in academic
context. Academic reading, listening, speaking and writing material will be
presented and practiced in class and/or given as home assignments to be
submitted electronically by the deadline.
The course is managed on e-Learning platform. All writing assignments are
uploaded and checked against similarity or plagiarism using Turnitin. If
plagiarism detected, the text will not be assessed and considered for revision.
The following methods and approaches will be used:
interactive lecture/seminar
flipped learning
scaffolding
brainstorming
discussion
individual, group- and pair-work
inductive/deductive methods
task-based learning
role plays and simulations
audio-lingual method
content and language integrated learning (CLIL)
product and process writing
demonstration/presentation
4
The self-study component comprises:
reading and listening material uploaded on the e-Learning
e-Learning -based tasks (vocabulary, research)
‘Independent Study’: tasks which students can do outside the classroom, on
their own or with a peer. Often the tasks require access to an external
resource such as a library or the Internet
‘Critical Thinking’: helps students engage critically with the texts they read
and the lectures they listen to
‘Language Reference’: provides in-depth information on meaning, form and
use. Students do this as a free-standing reference tool for self-study
‘Glossary’ of grammatical and academic terms used in the course book, to
check meanings and also clarify distinctions between essential items of
academic English terminology they may find confusing (e.g. cohesion vs
coherence)
Video and audio transcripts for increased support while listening, checking
of answers and modelling aspects of pronunciation and spoken English
The Student’s Book DVD-ROM: contains all the course video and audio
material from the listening and speaking modules
one final presentation on a selected theme
6 writing assignments
Students are encouraged to become autonomous, independent learners,
acquiring the knowledge and skills targeted in each unit of the course and
additional material used in the classroom and/or offered electronically
through their own self-study and experience.

კურსის მიზანი
კურსის მიზანია სტუდენტებს შესძინოს და განუვითაროს ოთხი მთავარი
ენობრივი უნარი (კითხვა, წერა, მოსმენა და საუბარი) და აკადემიური ენა.
ამასთან ერთად, კრიტიკული აზროვნება, კონსპექტის შედგენა, ციტირება
და მითითება, შეჯამება და პარაფრაზირება და პლაგიატის თავიდან

აუცილებელი.
10 Course English Language Course (B2-1) is a one-term programme, integrating four main
description and language skills, academic language and all the essential study skills needed at
Topics university level. The course features authentic texts from academic and higher
education books, both video and audio content, including extracts from lectures,
student presentations, and seminar discussions. Learners are encouraged to study
independently (e-Learning platform) and apply the course content to their chosen
discipline. The self-study and academic integrity aspect of the course is ensured
by using e-Learning platform with embedded Turnitin programme. Classes
balance academic content with language study. Students will receive detailed
instruction and individualized feedback (hot, delayed, face-to-face and remote).
The modular structure of the course allows both tutors and students the flexibility
to adapt the material to their own needs, which makes it suitable for use both
remotely and in class. Unit themes appeal to a wide range of learners whatever
their subject of study and the material does not require any specialist subject
knowledge. Through their engagement with the material, students systematically
and progressively develop academic skills, language and critical thinking.
The course focuses on the following themes:
1. Knowledge
2. Organization
3. Motivation
4. Nature
5. Power
6. Growth
One theme is covered in two weeks and each week deals with two modules –
featuring two core skills. Students on the course will be assigned particular tasks
on e-Learning with the feedback following it. After every session they are
advised to do intensive out-of-class reading for the next class, listen to designated
material, take notes while reading or listening and get ready for the next session.
They do six (6) writing assignments, upload on e-Learning and receive individual
feedback.
The order of the modules generally moves from the orthographic skills of reading
and writing into the oral skills of listening and speaking. Each topic ends with a
one-page Vocabulary module, which looks at key aspects of academic vocabulary
using content from the unit in question and the most useful vocabulary-learning
strategies.

4. Midterm Exam 16 -
Assessment criteria:
1. Language Skills (36 points)
This component comprises the assessment of four language skills – reading,
listening, writing and speaking – development. For each skill students are
awarded
1.5 points, which is the total of
a) class work (1.0 point), indicating that a student actively participates in
classroom activities, interacts effectively and collaborates with peers, listens
to them; arrives fully prepared and plays an active role in all class activities,
is prepared to give comments.
14
b) the work done at home
In other words, students acquire 1.5 points if at every session they show high level
of preparation as well as active participation in the session.
Each skill is assessed 6 times. This is the formula:
Reading Skill (Sessions 5,9,13,19, 23,26): 6 x 1.5 = 9
Writing Skill (Sessions 6,10, 14, 20, 24, 27): 6 x 1.5 = 9
Listening Skill (Sessions 3, 7, 11, 17, 21, 25 ): 6 x 1.5 = 9
1
The same criteria are used in the Midterm and Final Exams.
15
16
Lexical Range - looks at the use and variety of vocabulary in the writing: the
range of vocabulary, the frequency of spelling errors, word choice and simple
word formation
The marking scheme for the Presentation comprises a maximum of 6 points in the
course assessment, without any minimum benchmark. This is broken down into
the following components:
Content: how well the presentation covers the topic
Structure: how the speech is organized, transition from one part to the other
is marked by the signposting language used
Language: focuses on words and phrases used when making presentations in
English; level-specific accurate grammar, relevant general and academic
vocabulary/lexical resource
Delivery: the way in which presenter performs or delivers the speech and
focuses on the aspects like, audience rapport, eye contact, movement,
posture, body language, voice
Visualization: this is one of the delivery aspects and focuses on the use of
slides, handouts, board and other aids to convey the message and hold the
attention of the audience
For more details of the individual presentation assessment, please, refer
to Appendix # 2, Matrix #3
17
Students will sit one (1) Midterm exam (16 points, benchmark – 8 points) in Week
8. The exam is made up of two parts: Part One - Written Exam, including three
papers: Reading, Listening, Writing and Part Two – Speaking Paper.
11
3 See Academic Writing Assignment Assessment
11
Listening Paper: each correct answer is worth 1 point so the final score
depends on total number of questions answered correctly. (e. g. 12 correct
answers = 12 points (raw score), which is equivalent to 4 points (scaled score),
according to N × 4 ÷ 12 formula.
The criteria for marking Speaking Paper are the following: Grammar and
Vocabulary, Discourse Management, Pronunciation, Interactive
Communication. Each component takes maximum 4 points. Therefore,
overall score is 16 which equals to 4 points: 16/4. Accordingly, student’s raw
score is divided by 4.
For more details of the speaking skill assessment, please, refer to Appendix #
2, Matrix # 5.
Note: For final assessment all four skills are tested in the examination week.
Final examination is compulsory.
At the end of the semester students sit the Final Exam in the examination week.
The examination is compulsory for all students and tests all four skills – reading,
writing, listening and speaking as well as the academic language. There are two
parts: Written Test, including Reading, Writing, Listening, Academic Language
Papers, and Speaking Paper.
NB The format of the papers in the Final Exam is nearly the same as in the
Midterm above, with the only difference that the Midterm Exam is based on the
material covered over the first seven weeks of the course, while the Final Exam –
summarises all the material learned and practised over the whole course.
Academic Language Paper tests the lexical and grammatical material
covered, using tasks like multiple choice, sentence completion, open cloze,
etc.
12
4 See Academic Writing Assignment Assessment
12
Listening Paper: each correct answer is worth 1 point so the final score
depends on total number of questions answered correctly. (e. g. 12 correct
answers = 12 points (raw score), which is equivalent to 6 points (scaled score),
according to N × 6 ÷ 12 formula.
Academic Language Paper: each correct answer is worth 1 point so the final
score depends on total number of questions answered correctly. For example,
30 correct answers = 30 points (raw score), which is equivalent to 6 points
(scaled score), according to N × 6 ÷ 30 formula.
Speaking Test is assessed by Assessor and Interlocutor. The criteria for
marking Speaking Paper (Assessor’s scale) are the following: Grammar and
Vocabulary, Discourse Management, Pronunciation, Interactive
Communication. Each component takes maximum 6 points. Therefore,
overall score is 24. Interlocutor awards additional 6 points for the global
achievement. Consequently, 24+6/5 equals to 6 points. Accordingly,
student’s raw score is divided by 5.

შეფასების კრიტერიუმები
