SCHOOL-BASED FIRE DRILL

I. Introduction

School drills are a cornerstone of school DRR and preparedness. Children

face a wide range of physical risks during emergencies and spend a
significant amount of time in school. For this reason, most government and
school administrations require or advocate for emergency drills to allow
students and staff to practise and improve standard emergency response
procedures (Johnson, Ronan, Johnston & Peace, 2016) and risk reduction.
For most children, these drills constitute a significant – if not the sole – form of
education about emergency response and safety strategies (Selby & Kagawa,
2012). Developing links between schools and practising community-wide drills
can also help to promote a culture of safety.
Hence, fire prevention is very significant especially nowadays where we
are exposed to experiments and unmonitored cables that surround us.
Mitigation is deeming very helpful so as to be able to be ready during fire
alarms. More so, well-planned drills do not increase anxiety or worry in
children; rather, they increase their knowledge of what to do and their
confidence in their coping abilities. In this regard, the Dona Nena Elementary
School have participated the fire drill with the help of the Umingan Fire
Station.

II. Narrative Report

The Dona Nena Elementary School conducted its school-based fire
drill on September 20, 2022 at exactly 10 am. The said activity was
spearheaded by Mr. Nelson A. Espiritu who is the school DRR coordinator
through the approval and support of Madam Ruby A. Lacasandile and the
help of the faculty and staffs of the school. The drill was given a privilege to
be partnered by the Umingan Fire Station officers headed by Sr. Fire Officer
IV Wilson J. Barte together with FO1 Jayson Mata who discussed the fire
protection and mitigation and FO1 Christine Faith Carino who effortlessly
demonstrated the different parts of the fire extinguisher and how to use it. The
discussions and presentations were not just done verbally, but the teachers
and the learners were able to witness the drill like extinguishing fire using the
fire extinguisher and wet clothes to a carbonated tank. Herein, some learners
were tasked in fire extinguishing and given a practical training during fire
alerts. The drill was not limited only by teachers and learners, but also the
parents and the barangay official of Nancalabasaan.
As such, the school together with the Umingan Fire Station were able
to elucidate the different mitigating factors and what exact ways can be done
during fire alerts. More of this, the school proven that it is responsible to
providing quality training and education even to a young learners and proven
once more to the community that together we stand, divided we fall. In the
end, the mission was accomplished well.
