Purpose
‘The objective is to test the specimen for the rate of elongation during tensile testing of Aluminium specimen
on UTM and calculate 0.2% proof stress.
Scope
Al types of Aluminium alloys tested on Universal testing machine (UTM)
Responsibilities
Supenisor - Qualty Assurance ~ Helshe is responsible fr preparing test specimen as per the standard
requirement and calculates proof stess.
Terms and Definitions
UTM: Universal Testing Machine
Proof Strength: Offset yeld point (prof stress) When a yield pontis not easly defined based on the shape
of the stress-strain curve an offset yeld points arbitrary defined, The value for this is commonly stat 0.1
010.2% plastic strain
Proof Load: Proof load is defined as the maximum tensile force that can be applied to a specimen that wil
Not resul in plastic deformation
Extensometer: An extensometer is a device hal is used to meesure changes inthe lenth ofan obec itis
useful for stess-stvain measurements and tensile ests. ls name comes ftom “extenion-neter”
Methodology
Prior to testing, ensure proper calration
Prepare test specimen as per work instruction SA.E-QA-WI-4 wih a gauge length of $0 mm,
Assemble correct gs so tha the extensometer properly sits on he sample,
Mark he ends ofthe specimen using sciber/ marker, Drew the cele ne of the gauge length
Clamp extensometer to the specimen equally on either side, so that it is atthe conte ofthe specimen as
well 3s fo tho gauge ena,
Calculate the extensometer lengh at which he 0.2% proof strengths reported as flows
[0.2"(Gauge Lengthy109)
For example, if the gauge length is SOmm, the traverse distance ofthe dal gauge at which the proof stress
results is calculated as —-[0.2'50/100] = 0.1mm.
means that the load at which the extension of 0.1mm reported in both the dls is taken as proot load,
‘Start the Universal Testing Machine 2s per work instruction SA.E-QA.WIO4 and perform the test
Observe the gauges forthe distance caleulated as above and report the corresponding load.
Record the value in Mechanical Properties Test repor.
Calculate the proof stress by dividing the area of the specimen in Nim.
Record the proof stress in mechanical properties tet report
