Focus on most important tasks first. Turn off distractions like cell phone. You should write down
assignments, and to-do lists, then review items in the planner at both the beginning and end of
the day to stay on track. Take breaks and reflect when needed.

A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
1) Introduction (2 mins)

Welcome to Day2! In this session, you are going to know about the various Communication Models:
Linear, Interactive, and Transactional. Your goal for today is to understand each type, and differentiate
them with each other. Start discovering now! Before we proceed, answer first the activity below. Here is
a diagram of the 3 different models of communication. By looking at the diagram (consider the arrows)
scribble down the words that you can describe with the models.

corrections at the last page.

Have you answered the pre-test correctly? How was it? Do not worry if you answer some or all of it, as
we o along with our topic, you will be learning a lot. Let’s try to answer this activity. Just write what you
already know about the terms. You can do it!
Questions: What I know

1. How does linear communication works?

2. How does interactive communication works?

3. How does transactional communication works?

B. MAIN LESSON
1) Activity 2: Pre-Printed Content Notes (13 mins)

To know more about the topic, let’s read the texts below. You may also encircle the keywords for better
understanding.

There are various models of communication. Some of the earliest models were linear in nature.
In other words, communication was conceived as a one-way process. According to a linear model of
communication, a speaker sends a message to a listener who receives the message. A speaker’s role,
then, is to encode the message, whereas the listener’s role is to decode it. Encoding is the process of
putting ideas into symbols, in this case, into words that the listener ought to understand. Conversely,
decoding is the process of attaching meanings to the symbols we see or hear. It is a one-way model to
communicate with others. It consists of the sender encoding a message and channeling it to the receiver
in the presence of noise. In this model there is no feedback which may allow for a continuous exchange
of information. This form of communication is a one-way form of communication that does not involve
any feedback or response, and noise.

An interactive model of communication improves on the ideas expressed in the linear models,
first, by accounting for the feedback receivers (listeners) return to senders, so that meaning is created
by senders and receivers. Feedback consists of all those verbal and nonverbal messages receivers
send back to senders during a communication interaction. This model has added feedback, indicating
that communication is not a one way but a two-way process. It also has “field of experience” which
includes our cultural background, ethnicity geographic location, extent of travel, and general personal
experiences accumulated over the course of your lifetime.

A transactional model of communication expands on the earlier models by accounting for the
simultaneous sending and receiving of messages during a communication interaction, as well as the
numerous ways in which the communication situation might influence the interaction. It assumes that
people are connected through communication; they engage in transaction. First, it recognizes that each
of us is a sender-receiver, not merely a sender or a receiver. Secondly, it recognizes that
communication affects all parties involved. So, communication is fluid/simultaneous. This is what most
conversations are like.

2) Activity 3: Skill-building Activities (with answer key) (18 mins + 2 mins checking)

Now that you have read the concept above, let’s try to answer this activity. Given below are images that
depict a communication process. Study the image and answer the questions that follow. Answer YES or
NO to each question.

Image 1 - Public
Speaking
1. Is there a speaker and a receiver in this process? yes
2. Can the receiver provide immediate feedback and
interact? no
3. Is the giving of message one-way
only? yes

This is how Linear

Communication works!

Image 2 - Talk Show

Interview
1. Is there a speaker and a receiver in this process? yes
2. Can the speaker and receiver take turns in giving
feedback? yes
3. Is the process two-way and interactive? yes

This is how Interactive Communication

works!

Image 3 - Silent
Treatment
1. Do you agree that even if they are not talking, they are still
sending and
receiving messages simultaneously? yes
2. Do you agree that each person here are both sender and receiver
at the
same time? yes
3 3. Are the couple here reacting depending on context, field of
FLM 1.0 experience, and attitude? yes

This is how Transactional Communication works!

Nice work in answering the activities! Now, it’s time for you to answer the questions in the What I learnt
chart. Let us see if there are additional information you learned from what you have read. After that, let’s
try to compare your answer from Activity 1.
Questions: What I learnt

1. How does linear communication works?

2. How does interactive communication works?

3. How does transactional communication works?

4) Activity 5: Check for Understanding (5 mins)

Did you compare your answers? How was it? Great! You are indeed learning! Let us try to check your
understanding by answering this activity. Differentiate the different models of communication by
analyzing each diagram. Then, identify what model is being expressed in each. Identify whether it is
LINEAR, INTERACTIVE or TRANSACTIONAL. Write your answer on the space provided.

FAQs
1. Why is are model of communication important?
As communicating is a rigid process to understand, communication model can be an essential source
to understand such rigidity. Models predict for more effective communication in future. They also
predict the success or failure of a particular communication process.

2. What is the common communication model?

This model is the most general model of communication as even our daily interactions are instances
of transactional model communication. Transactional model becomes more efficient and effective
when the participants are of similar environment, know each other and share same social system.
