Single row deep groove ball bearings (DGBB)

• Accepts radial, axial, and
combined loads
– Thrust load limit is based on
shoulder height, speed,
radial load, and design life
– Available in shielded and
sealed designs for
contaminant exclusion
Ex: 4220
• Accepts very slight
misalignment
– 2-10 minutes of arc

Back-to-Back vs Face-to-Face arrangement

BACK-TO-BACK (O-arrangement)
Advantages:
• Easy mounting on the shaft
• No clamping of outer rings are needed
• Less sensitive to the thermal gradient than
face-to-face arrangement
• Ability to support tilting moment
Disadvantages:
• Higher sensitivity to misalignment than face-to-face

FACE-TO-FACE (X-arrangement)
Advantages:
• Higher misalignment capabilities than back-to-back
Disadvantages:
• Clamping of outer rings is a must.
• More sensitive to thermal gradient than back-to-back

Bearing designation system

Bearing dimensions are generally metric
• There is a limited assortment of inch bearing series
• There are a few sizes of metric bearings that have an inch bore
• Mounted bearings are generally metric bearings with inch bore sizes

• Bearings are made to

internationally standardized
overall dimensions
• These dimensions affect the
overall envelope size:
• Inside diameter (d)
• Outside diameter (D)
• Width (B)
• Standardized dimensions do
not imply standard internal
geometry and function

IF YOU USE THE SUPPLIERS NUMBERING SYSTEM (designations),

OR YOUR OWN :

• BE ALWAYS UPDATED ON THE SYSTEM.

• BE AWARE THAT THE BASIC (main) DESIGNATION ONLY IDENTIFIES THE TYPE AND
DIMENSIONS, BUT NOT AT ALL THE SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS.

• STOCK BEARINGS & ACCESSORIES SEPARATELY.

• AS A RULE DO NOT MIX BEARINGS WITH METALLIC AND NON-METALLIC CAGES.

• SIMPLIFY AND ELIMINATE VARIANTS WHERE POSSIBLE.

Mineral oil + additives (90%) - Standard applications

Animal and vegetable oils

(1%) – Food compatible

Synthetic oils(9%) – special properties, more expensive

Lubrication film

26
3/26/2015

Viscosity

Viscosity is the primary property of oil where bearings are concerned

• measure of the friction between different layers of a liquid that is set
in motion
• liquid’s resistance to flow
– High Viscosity = high resistance to flow
– Low Viscosity = low resistance to flow
– Viscosity ; pressure
– Viscosity; 1/temperature

Selecting viscosity for rolling bearings

Low viscosity High viscosity

low friction thick oil film

Thin oil film high friction

Find the right balance

27
3/26/2015

ISO VG Grade

Estimation of required viscosity

28
3/26/2015

Example - Selecting oil viscosity

Bearing number: 6312

Speed = 1,500 rpm & temperature = 70° C

Bearing bore, d = 60mm

Bearing O.D., D = 130mm

dm = (d+D)/2= 95 mm

dm = 95mm and speed = 1,500 rpm

29
3/26/2015

Viscosity and operating temperature

Minimum required viscosity

Kappa, κ
• ν/ν1
• ν1 is the viscosity required at operating temperature
• ν is the viscosity achieved at operating temperature
• Below 1, the film is not thick enough to prevent metallic contact and
expected life is shortened
• For grease lubrication when κ is below 1, EP or AW additives are required
• For oil lubrication when κ is below 0.4, EP additives are required

Oil bath
• When use oil bath:
Low and Medium speeds
Application
• Static oil bath Max. level = center
of bottom-most rolling element
• Minimum oil level = 1 mm above
outer ring shoulder diameter
•Oil bath replacement generally
recommended every 6 months for
typical applications.

• Set oil level for vertical application:

–SRDG: at or slightly above vertical centerline of the
bearing
–DRBB: not recommended
–SRB: completely submerged
• Higher levels of friction with fully submerged bearings
• May limit operating speed

Grease fill

First fill:
100% of the bearing volume and 40% of the housing if lubricated by the side or
20% of the housing if lubricated by the centre
90% for low speed high contaminated applications

Replenishment Value:
Lubrication by the side: Lubrication by the centre:

G = 0.002 D B
G = 0.005 D B

Re-lubrication interval for horizontal shaft at 70 °C

• n = speed
• dm = bearing pitch diameter
• A= n x dm
• bf = bearing factor

Lubrication interval
the bearing outer ring

- It is not advisable to use

relubrication intervals in excess of
30 000 Hours

- Increasing interval is not advised

for Full Complement and Thrust
Roller Bearings

• For vertical shafts, the intervals should be halved.

Example - Relubrication interval

Bearing number: 6312 – Medium load (C/P= 8) on Vertical Shaft

Speed = 3000 rpm & temperature = 85° C
Bearing bore d = 60mm
Bearing O.D.D = 130mm
190mm
dm = bearing bore (mm) + bearing O.D. (mm) / 2 dm = 95 mm

•n = speed
•dm = bearing pitch diameter
•bf = bearing factor

n x dm x bf = 3000 x 95 x 1 = 285,000

Example - find the interval

Example - relubrication interval correction

3000 hr is for Horizontal Shaft at 70° C
Correction for Temp. 85 °C: 3000/2 = 1500 hr
Correction for Vertical Shaft: 1500/2 = 750 hr

Gp (gr) = 0.005 x D(mm) x B(mm)

Gp (gr) = 0.005 x 130 x 31
Gp (gr) = 20 gr

Replenishment = 20 gr every 750 operating hours when machine is in operation

and grease escape valve is open (should be left opened 15-30 min after
replenishment)
Renew grease when 75% of housing is filled or after 5 times replenishment
750 x 6 = 4500 operating hours
Bearing fill = 100%
Housing fill = 40 %

Dismounting

Important issues when dismounting:

• Safe
• Quick
• Without damaging housing or shaft
• Sometimes without damaging the bearing

3 possible ways of dismounting

• Mechanical (combined with
hydraulics)
• Heating
• Hydraulic
