THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Alcohols contains some substance that causes a person to crave for more. In chemistry,

alcohol is a type of organic compound that carries at least one hydroxyl functional group bound

to a saturated carbon atom. Drinking alcohols can be considered as a bad habit specially when

you are still young. Person's being addicted to alcohols tend to have problems to their thinking.

Not only old people or in legal age but also minors who are specifically learners who

drinks alcohols due to the trends and will surely destruct to their studies, in short there will be a

complication to their grades. Too much drinking alcohol can affect on a student's academic

performance. You might prioritize drinking alcohols rather than to attend classes, answering

homeworks and also studying for quizzes and exams. Not focusing in school academic

performances can make your grades complicated or in danger whether it is going to fail or pass.

Our research focuses on the effect of alcoholism to the academic performances of the senior high

school learners in Ichon National High School. According to Mettille (2008) it is clearly states

that dangerous drinking is likely to affect students disproportionately.

In a survey conducted by the University of the Philippines, 60 percent of Filipino youths

today are drinking alcohol beverages. Even at young age, Filipino teenagers are already drinking.

A study conducted by the East-West Center (EWC) in Hawaii showed 2 percent of boys began

drink by age 15.

Nowadays people's go what is trend by the influence of their peers and friends or the

people around us. But we must surely do our responsibility as a student or learners. In our

barangay Ichon Mac. So. Leyte, we barely observed that teenagers are most likely to have

jamming or bonding with their friends and I think it is one of their way to of coping stress, they

are most likely to buy some beers, and other alcoholic drinks to make their bonding more

exciting. They are most likely to have their bonds in the streets or in a place where they are

comfortable with that will make some destruction to people who are studying or resting so their

must be a possibility that they will forgot their homeworks or school projects and can't study

either. So we choose to conduct this research to find research to find data's or to know what

could be the possible effects of alcoholism to the academic performance of the possible effects of

alcoholism to the academic performance of the senior high school learners in Ichon National

High School.
