different structures according to what company it manages that flows according to the
form of the site.

Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. Horizontal and vertical circulation of each building
was provided with a lift because almost all of the structures has two floors more which
holds different products. While horizontal solutions can only be seen outside the building

9
because there’s no available source or the site is not accessible by the public, so it would
be not possible to get inside the techno park and gather more information.

Site Planning and Landscape Detailing. Laguna Technopark is easily accessible from
the Philippines’ primary international airports – the Ninoy Aquino International Airport
Terminal 1 to 3. It is also driving distance from two international seaports – Port of

each other.

2.1.2 Elite Techno Park

General Description

Elite Techno Park (ETP) was conceptualized two (2) years ago when their
engineers and principal investors thought of extending the semiconductor industry to the
Filipino students. They have noticed that Semiconductor is very limited in our curriculum
which is understandable because of the high cost involved in the facilities and materials.
But with the K-12 program of DepEd, they believe that this is the right time to put up this
exhibit. Elite Techno Park features the Techno-Vocational Track of K-12 program of the
Department of Education in the field of Engineering (Semiconductor, SMT, PCB
Assembly and Electronics), Mechanic and Automotive, Air Conditioning, Information
Technology (Robotics), Solar Energy and Renewable Resources, Weather Forecasting
(Climate Education) and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness. Elite Techno Park has
different learning modules for elementary to tertiary level. It provides activities for the
visitors to have hands-on experience on each module. It aims to utilize the skills of the
students and open job opportunities for them even before their graduation. This will
supplement their technical knowledge for their chosen technical courses and this can help
them if they opt to enter the corporate world or venture into businesses. Further, all
modules will discuss the importance of technology and its contribution to save our
Mother Earth.

Architectural Analysis

Location: Morong, Bataan.

Figure 11. Entrance to Bataan Techno Park

Review

Environment and Microclimate. Bataan is located near SBFZ which is a city of tourism,
there are tons of people who can go nearby. It will adopt its environment and apply it to
the design proper of the technopark. Carrying on as a place of hope and concord, there are
plans to transform the park into a spiritual pilgrimage destination for the international
community.

User Behaviour and Requirement. As a tourist attraction, Bataan Technology Park is a

must-see destination in Bataan. Visitors can visit the museum featuring the history and of
the camp, as well as the relics, temples, memorials and shrines. Original refugee boat was

21
used to escape from their home countries. The place is rich in multi-cultural history and a
reminder of the Filipinos’ hospitality to refugees.

Utility and Space Enhancement. Facilities such as clinics, canteens, schools and the likes
were built to guarantee favorable and conducive living for the refugees.

Form and Function. One of the first sights at the camp is the Freedom Plaza that
signifies safety, freedom and a new beginning. As part of giving new hope and faith to the
refugees, despite the differences in religion, refugees were united when Saint Pope John
Paul II visited the PRPC and held a field mass attended by thousands of refugees on
February 21, 1981. Indeed, the PRPC became a home of solidarity, understanding, and
alliance among the different nationalities and beliefs.

Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. There are no vertical circulation since there are no
upper floors in the buildings. Since the site is large, the horizontal circulation are paths,

2.2 Foreign Case Studies

2.2.1 Battery Park

General Description

Battery Park is a new 12 000 sqm (1.2 hectares) urban park situated at a key
entranceway to one of Africa’s most visited tourist destinations, the V&A Waterfront in
Cape Town, South Africa. Developed as the nucleus of a larger urban vision for the
district, the site includes a park and piazza that effectively conceal a 1 206-bay parking
facility as well as new pedestrian routes to invigorate the precinct with activity. The site is
of archaeological importance as it contains the remnants of one of the city’s oldest
structures, coastal fortification the Amsterdam Battery. This provided a unique
opportunity for architecture and urban design firm dhk – to pay homage to the historic

23
landmark whilst incorporating a parking facility and providing spaces for leisure and
recreational activities.

27
Environment and Micro-Climate. Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate: wet
and cool winters, dry and warm summers. The annual average temperature in Cape Town
is a delightful 17 degrees. As in the city of Cape Town itself, the weather on the Cape
Peninsula is quite unique. The weather in Cape Town is influenced by two currents: the
warm Agulhas current from the Indian Ocean side and the cold Benguela current on the
Atlantic side.
Cape Town offers the most scenic sunsets, thanks to the meeting of two oceans (the warm
Indian Ocean from East Africa and the cold Atlantic Ocean from the South Pole) at Cape
Agulhas and the warm berg winds from inland South Africa. Especially during cloudy or
overcast weather, the sunsets gives a really stunning perspective.

User Behavior and Requirements. The project forms part of an urban design framework
created by dhk for the V&A’s previously underutilized Canal District that facilitates the
reconnection of the historical city center and De Waterkant to the V&A. The aim was to
create a publicly accessible park which lies at the nexus of a multitude of new pedestrian
routes stitching the new district into the surrounding urban fabric and thereby helping to
invigorate the area.

Utility and Space Enhancement. During construction of Battery Park, archaeological

excavations revealed former datums which were used to inform the design. The raised
park has been kept at the battery’s original inner courtyard level whilst planted edges
above retail units on the piazza represent the estimated natural ground level that fronted
the battery.

Form and Function. The requirement to respect the original inner courtyard datum and
create a lower-level piazza resulted in an elevated park with views across the V&A and
CBD but with the challenge of managing the transition between the two levels. Therefore,
a large part of Battery Park’s design concept was manifested in breaking the barrier
between the park and piazza and bringing them closer to one another.

Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. The park level has been designed to gradually
lower towards the canal edge providing a closer connection to the piazza, and in turn, the
piazza gradually steps down towards the canal. The vision was to create a scale between
the two levels and provide visual cues to visitors; offering a glimpse of the park while
they meander along the canal edge. This was also achieved by means of various soft and

28
hard landscaping elements such as a grand concrete staircase leading from the piazza to
the park, sloping and folding walls, and plants to draw the eye to the park above. On the
elevated park level, visitors can explore landscaped gardens with trees and stone-clad
planters, meandering walkways with built-in benches, a concrete skatepark, basketball
court, and new pedestrian routes.

Site Planning and Landscape Detailing. Various architectural and landscaped elements
reflect the structure’s original footprint, such as semi-circular curved pathways, concrete
additions to the rear ramparts, splayed canal-facing walls and concrete-clad structures -
giving visitors an authentic sense of the battery’s former size. An axial visual connection
to Cape Town’s Noon Gun on Signal Hill has also been retained, thus preserving the
site’s historic sightline.

Structural Details. Throughout the park and piazza cantilevered steel pergolas scale the
design and provide much-needed shade. The lower piazza level contains 11 boutique
retail units that line the splayed canal-facing walls and form an active eastern edge to the
new canal pedestrian route. The materials palette includes a selection of hardy materials
that suit the robust nature of the park, namely, concrete, stone, and steel. Concrete was
chosen as a “material of our time” for new structures as it can be clearly distinguished
from historic elements, ensuing little misinterpretation. A precast concrete panel structure
dubbed the interpretation pavilion has been built to the estimated height of the battery’s
original walls and links the park, piazza and parking facility via internal elevators.

Building Services. Since it more on park, the building services such as Fire alarm system
and HVAC are installed within the building. The site also has good water supply systems
because of the water features that are present within the site.

Design Detailing. The design of the site considers the barrier-free environment since it is
a park which is accessible to all people.

Socio-Economic Profile of User Group. Cape Town is the second most populous city in
South Africa, estimated about 4,232,276 in 2017. It is famous around the world for its
beautiful harbor and is considered one of the best places in the world to visit. Cape Town
and the Western Cape are attracting many migrants, largely due to the area being an

29
employment hub. Unfortunately, Cape Town cannot keep up with the pace of migration
for long as it puts a great deal of pressure on the city and businesses which provide jobs.

Parking Details and Standards. The site has no vehicle parking area or slots since it is
located in an area that is not accessible on the major road, making it a walkable area.

Architectural Synthesis

The designing of Battery Park with the consideration of the surrounding

especially the bodies of water can be a great design solution to create a new techno park.
And also they utilize the materials that are only available in their locality.

2.2.2 Sabancı University Composite Technology Research and Development Centre

Environment and Micro-Climate. The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Marmara
Sea including Istanbul, which connects the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, have a
transitional climate between a temperate Mediterranean climate and a temperate Oceanic
climate with warm to hot, moderately dry summers and cool to cold, wet winters.

User Behavior and Requirements. The building has a closed area of 17.000 m2 on a
rectangular plot of 6.200 m2. It houses production, research laboratory and office
functions. The center is used by production engineers, technicians, students, lecturers and
employees of incubator offices and thus special spatial arrangements are shaped by the
needs of different groups that eventually affects the massing.

Utility and Space Enhancement. Due to the special mechanical and electrical
requirements, the building is divided vertically into two separate zones. The mechanical
and electrical equipment were placed in the first basement and the roof terrace. Expanded
metal grids are used around the entire structure to hide the mechanical installation on the
roof.

Form and Function. The plans are almost like a rectangular form and it achieved an
office-like atmosphere because of its form and the materials used. Considering its
technical functions, the prismatic massive form of the structure can be thought of as a
heavy piece of machine placed on the ground. The selection of dark-colored reflective
glass and coated metal claddings and the hefty mass also enhances this perception.

Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. The oblique eave on the corner of the building is
considered a contradictory three-dimensional element that attracts users and visitors to the
main entrance lobby. There are two elevators in the building and three staircase located in
different areas inside.

Site Planning and Landscape Detailing. The building is situated on a slightly sloped lot.
There are minor details in the site that mostly of it is not been developed.

Structural Details. The building utilized more on using wood, glass, and steel.
Considering its technical functions, the prismatic massive form of the structure can be
thought of as a heavy piece of machine placed on the ground. The selection of dark-

33
colored reflective glass and coated metal claddings and the hefty mass also enhances this
perception.

Building Services. HVAC, Fire alarm systems and water supply systems are properly
installed within the building.

Design Detailing. The first two floors are reserved for production-focused activities;
laboratories, incubation rooms, meeting rooms, and classes are located on the 3rd and 4th
floors. The 5th floor houses the office spaces and a lounge as a socializing area. Service

Research and Development Centre provided a parking slots in the site and a basement
parking that is shown in the site plan and the sections.

Architectural Synthesis

The good choice of materials for the exterior and the interior of the building are
one of the things that the researcher wants to apply in the proposal and also on how the
designers of this Research and Development Centre considers the light and the
ventilation.

Environment and Microclimate. It is located in Bornova which is a metropolitan district

of İzmir in İzmir Province in Turkey. It is the third largest district in İzmir's Greater
Metropolitan Area of and is almost fully urbanized at the rate of 98,6 per cent, with
corresponding high levels of development in terms of industry and services. İzmir has a
Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by long, hot, and dry summers, and mild to
cool, rainy winters.

User Behaviour and Requirement. The 1000m2 technopark facility will house
independent R & D facilities of large Turkish and International companies focusing on
biotechnology, energy, materials and software research. This program is coupled with

36
strategically situated “catalysts” to increase interaction and collaboration potential among
all members of this community.

Utility and Space Enhancement. The primary objective is for the space to become a
space that enables collaborative and transparent research as well as a production
environment that allows new points of intersection amongst different fields of expertise,
leading to the creation of impactful research projects in the long term.

Form and Function. The project started with the discovery of a dormant site with the
rubble of a demolished building amidst the large university campus. By repurposing
locally acquired second hand shipping containers located 12km away in Izmir port, the
design team was able to upcycle an underused site with underused construction materials.

Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. There are several buildings in the site and each
building has a corresponding purpose and stairs are mostly used for the vertical
circulation. Horizontal circulation of within the buildings can be seen in the site plan and
the floor plans such as corridors, paths, walkways, etc.

Site-Planning and Landscape Detail. Looking into the site, solar orientation, existing
campus circulation routes, wind angles, tree shaded areas and the contours of the previous
building helped craft a meaningful and financially viable programmatic division,
volumetric arrangement and ultimately a fluid user circulation. Storyboard of possible
user interactions helped communicate the importance of catalyst programs around art,
design and technology. Meanwhile, a vertical ‘beacon’ container, an inner courtyard,
narrow cross-circulation corridors, and ample seating spots enable spaces for prospect and
refuge, as well as spontaneous encounters and play.

Structural Detail. Given that adaptability and resilience of a core & shell building is its
biggest asset in the long term, the project features multiple technical details such as
exposed beams and columns, visible electrical trays, abundant plugs, high-capacity
ventilation, locally controllable heating-cooling systems and supporting sub-structure to
help build separators in the future. All these systems help easily modify spatial programs
over time.

37
Building Services. HVAC, Fire alarm systems and water supply systems are properly
installed within the building.

Design Detailing. Programmatically, by placing interaction catalysts across the site,

designing alternative layouts and modular furniture, envisioning sections of the container
facades as a workable canvas for muralists and designing for easy dismantlement and
relocation, the project becomes a manifestation of a building as a prototype, one that
entails galvanizing a talented community in Izmir and beyond.

Socio-Economic Profile of the User Group. The project’s need was the creation of a
space that houses office and laboratory units to be rented out as well as a mobile structure
to be moved to different locations as needed. At this point, building types with a simple
construction process and the opportunities in regard to İzmir’s location were researched.

Parking Detail and Standard. The parking slots for vehicular are situated in the south
western part of the site.

Architectural Synthesis

The best thing in this project is that their primary objective for the space to
become a space that enables collaborative and transparent research as well as a
production environment that allows new points of intersection amongst different fields of
expertise, leading to the creation of impactful research projects in the long term. With
these, it can be applied to the proposal of this study.

Environment and Microclimate. Shenzhen is a major city in Guangdong Province, China; it

forms part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis, bordering Hong Kong to the south, Huizhou to
the northeast, and Dongguan to the northwest. It holds sub-provincial administrative status, with
powers slightly less than those of a province.
Due to its subtropical climate, Shenzhen weather is mild with plenty of sunshine and rainfall all
year round. Summer in this city usually lasts for as long as 6 months, but without being overly
hot. In comparison, winter is very short and not cold at all.

User Behaviour and Requirement. Zhi Art Museum connects people in the aspects of work and
life and contributes to a working place with a cultural community. In addition to the function of
the exhibition hall, it also has a multi-function hall and workshops. By means of exhibitions,
training, lectures, and forums, it brings a tight connection between art culture and people’s life,
acting as a communication platform for multi-arts and multi-cultures.

Utility and Space Enhancement. The museum is composed of two floors. The first floor has a
hallway and a multi-functional hall, while the second floor functions as exhibition halls and
workshops.

Form and Function. By means of exhibitions, training, lectures, and forums, it brings a tight
connection between art culture and people’s life, acting as a communication platform for multi-
arts and multi-cultures.

41
Horizontal and Vertical Circulation. Walking inside, a façade of the museum changes from the
grille to a horn-shaped glass window, the narrow and long hallway will guide you from ordered
space to viewing space. After passing through the hallway, visitors will go into an atrium with the
two-floor-height ceiling. The transition from a narrow and long space into a tall and high space
suddenly brings visitors a broad vision. The stairs and slopes in the atrium connect the first floor
and the second floor. Walking on the stairs and slopes, visitors enjoy a journey of art while they
sense aesthetics and interest of the architectural space before the exhibition. The alternation
between stairways and slopes makes people feel different rhythms and paces during walking.

Site-Planning and Landscape Detail. The building is situated in the Quanzhi

Technology Innovation Park, Baoan District, Shenzhen. Interlinking different public
spaces within the park.

Structural Detail. Black staircases, white walls, and wood-grain concrete walls create a
simple but elegant and pure artistic conception. Different from conventional beam
stairway, the stair steps, and sideboards form a complete structural system of a steel-plate
stair with structural aesthetics.

Building Services. HVAC, Fire alarm systems and water supply systems are properly
installed within the building.

Design Detailing. Façade of the museum is decorated with fluorocarbon lacquer coated
steel plate with natural uneven textures which echo the artistic style of the museum. The
designers implemented the Barrier-free architecture for comfortable access to disabled
people.

Socio-Economic Profile of the User Group. The user are mostly came from the urban
