Very Good! What do we call to a polygon with 4 sides and 4 Ma’am it’s called
angles? Quadrilateral.

Very Good, class. Quadrilateral is the geometric figure that has

four sides, four angles and four vertices.
The prefix “quad-“means “four”, and “lateral” is derived from
the Latin word for “side”.

I have some objects here and you will try to identify if it is a Stop sign is the only
quadrilateral or not, then state your reason. object that doesn’t

the shapes except the
stop sign have 4
sides, 4 angles and 4

(The real-life quadrilateral examples are the cards, chess

boards, and traffic signs.)

But the question is what makes a quadrilateral a parallelogram?

How would you know whether or not a figure is a
parallelogram?
So, let focus on quadrilateral to know how quadrilateral a
parallelogram.
D. Discussing new Let us discuss what makes a quadrilateral a parallelogram. Take ( the students listen
concepts and a look at the power point presentation for better understanding carefully to their
practicing new of the lesson. teacher)
skills #1
Parallelogram is a quadrilateral where both pairs of opposite
sides are parallel. But how can we determine the conditions that
make a quadrilateral a parallelogram?

So, here are the six important properties of parallelogram to

know:
1. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of
opposite sides are congruent.

Right, ma’am.
Bottom ma’am.
Before anything else, what is the opposite of left? How about
top?
Line segment BC,
If AD is at the left side, what side is located at the right side? ma’am.
So, the opposite side of AD is BC .
Very good, class! Line segment DC,
ma’am.
How about AB? What is the opposite side?

As you can see, the left side is congruent to the right side and
also the top side is congruent to the bottom side of the
quadrilateral. The value of DC is
10 units.
For example, if the value of AB is 10 units, what is the value of
DC ? AB∧DC are
opposite sides so
What is the relationship of AB∧DC ? their measurement
are equal to each
other.
 AD ≅ BC ∧AB ≅ DC
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogram

2. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of

opposite angles are congruent.

Angle C.

If angle D is congruent to angle B then angle A is congruent to The ∠ C is

angle what? congruent to angle
That’s correct! ∠ A.
For example, the value of ∠C is 13°, what angle is congruent Yes, ma’am.
to ∠ C ? They’re both
measures 13°
Does ∠ C and ∠ A are both measures 13 °? because ∠ C and
If yes, why? What is their relationship to each other? ∠ A are opposite
angles.

 ∠ D ≅ ∠ B∧∠ A ≅ ∠C
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogram

3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if pairs of consecutive

angles are supplementary.

When we say supplementary, the sum of the measures of the

angles is equal to 180°. Number 23, ma’am
∠ A ma’am
When we say consecutive angle, it only means that the angle
next to the angle.

For example, what is the consecutive of number 22?

That’s right! So, if ∠ D is the consecutive angle of ∠ C on the 180°
bottom side, what is the consecutive angle of ∠ D on the left
side? ∠ B is measure 103°
Very good, seems you really understand our topic. because if they are
supplementary
So, if angle A and angle B are consecutive angles, it is equal to? angles, the sum of
that two angles are
For example, if the measurement of ∠ A is equal to 77°, what is equal to 180°
the measurement of the ∠ B to prove that they are consecutive
angles? ∠ B is the
consecutive angle of
∠ A and they are
supplementary.
What is the relationship between ∠ A and ∠ B?
 m∠ A∧m ∠ B=180°
 m∠ B∧m∠ C=180 °
 m∠C∧m∠ D=180 °
 m∠ D∧m∠ A=180°
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogram

4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if the diagonals bisect

each other.

When we say bisect, it means to divide into two equal parts.

You can bisect lines, angles, and more.

For example, if diagonal AC and diagonal BD bisects each

other at point M, then diagonal AC will be divided into two 14 ma’am
congruent segments, AM and AC . Diagonal BD will be divided
into two congruent segments, BM and DM 28 ma’am
For example, if the measure of segment AM is 14, what is the
measure of segment CM?
How about the segment AC?
Very good, class!

 AM ≅ CM ∧BM ≅ DM
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogram

5. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if each diagonal

divides a parallelogram into two congruent triangles.

 If Δ CDA ≅ Δ ABC
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogram

6. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if one pair of opposite

sides is congruent and parallel.

Segment AB is parallel to segment DC then segment AB is

congruent to segment DC.

 If AB ≅ DC∧ AB∨¿ DC
 Then ABCD is a Parallelogra

E. Discussing To find the measures of angles, sides and other quantities ( the students listen
concepts and involving parallelograms, we need also to use some properties. carefully to their
practicing new teacher)
skills #2 What are the properties being use to find the measures of sides
and angles involving parallelogram?

Let’s have the first property

 A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if opposite sides are
congruent and parallel.
When we say congruent, it has same measure and when we say
parallel, as we extend the sides, they will never intersect.

So, I have here an example.

Example #1: If we have here quadrilateral NICE and it is
Parallelogram. If the measure of ¿ is 48 and EC is 5x-2, find
the value of x.

Step 1: Draw the given.

C
Step 2: Identify the opposite sides.

¿ ≅ EC

NE ≅ IC

Step 3: Formulate the equation, then solve for x.

EN ≅ CI

5 x – 2 = 48

5 x = 48 + 2

5 x = 50

5 5

x = 10

Example #2: Find the value of x to make quadrilateral FOUR a

parallelogram. Then solve side FO and RU.

Step 1: Formulate the equation.

3x–5=x+7

Step 2: Solve for x

3x–5=x+7
3x–x=5+7

2 x = 12

2 2

x=6

Checking:

FO = 3 x - 5

= 3 (6) – 5

= 18 5

FO = 13 units

The measures of FO∧RU is equal to 13 units.

 Then FOUR is a Parallelogram

 A quadrilateral is parallelogram if:

a. opposite angles are congruent; and
b. consecutive angles are supplementary.

In this property, we will focus on angles. When we say

supplementary, the measure of two consecutive angles is equal
to 180 °.

Example 3: ABCD is a parallelogram. If m∠ L = 45°, find the

measure of the remaining 3 angles.

Step 1: Draw and mark the given.

L M
45°

O N

Step 2: Identify the relationship of each angle to ∠ L.

∠ L is opposite of ∠ N , then m∠ N = m∠ L .

m∠ N = 45°

∠O is consecutive to ∠ L, then m∠O + m∠ L = 180°

m∠O + 45° = 180°

m∠O = 180° - 45°

m∠O = 135°

∠ M is consecutive to ∠ O, then m∠ M + m∠ L = 180°

m∠ M + 45° = 180°

m∠ M = 180° - 45°
m∠ M = 135°

Example 4: Quadrilateral JOYS is a parallelogram. Find the

value of x when ∠ O = (23 x + 5)° and ∠Y = (13 x – 5)°. Also
find the measure of the remaining angles?

Step 1: Draw and mark the given.

( )

( )

Step 2: Identify the relationship of the given.

∠O and ∠ Y are consecutive, so they must be supplementary.

Step 3: Formulate an equation, then solve.

23 x + 5 + 13 x – 5 = 180

36 x = 180

36 36

x=5

m∠ O = 23 x + 5

= 23 (5) + 5

= 115 + 5

m∠ O = 120° while m∠ Y = 60°

∠O and ∠ S are opposite angles, the m∠ S = 120°

∠Y and ∠ J are opposite angles, the m∠ S = 60°

 A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if the diagonals bisect

each other.

Example 5: BHIE is a parallelogram. Its diagonals bisect each

other at point Y. If BY measures 23 dm, how long is IY and
BI?

BY ≅ IY

BY =IY

Since BY is 23, IY = 23 dm.

BI = BY + IY

= 23 + 23

BI = 46 dm.

BY = 23 dm so, the diagonal BI is 46 dm and segment YI is 23

dm.
