Images found in either print and non-print or digital materials may depict real or
make-believe, fact or non-fact concepts. It is real or a fact if it could happen in
real life. It is make-believe or non-fact if it does not exist in real life.

Let’s go to a museum painting exhibit and classify the paintings found there as to
REAL or MAKE-BELIEVE.
REAL MAKE-BELIEVE
Elicitation:
1. Why did you say that these images are real? (point to the group of real
images)
2. Why did you say that these images are make-believe? (point to the group
of make-believe images)
That’s right!
Real images are pictures which depict visuals of objects or happenings that exist
in real life. These are also known as fact images.
Make-believe images are pictures which illustrate something that is not real.
Though these images may have some realistic features, they are just product of
imagination, thus, do not exist in real life. These are also known as non-fact
images.
Images are found everywhere. They are found and used in books, whether fiction
or non-fiction, advertisements or commercials, movies, tv, newspapers and
magazines. They are used for varied purposes. Would you care to know these
purposes?

Compare and contrast the pairs of images in 1, 2 and 3 and answer the following
questions:
1. Which images are real? Which are make-believe? Why did you say so?
2. What do the first pair of images explain or inform? When an image informs or
explains, what is its purpose?
3. What reaction do the second pair of images invoke? Why are they funny?
When images are funny, what are their purpose?
4. When you saw the third pair of images, what did you say to yourself? Do you
think these images will convince a smoker to really quit smoking? Why? When
an image convinces or influences someone to stop, think and take an action, what
is its purpose?
5. What are the three purposes of real and make-believe images when used in
print, online or broadcast?
Directions: Study the images and click the correct purpose using the mouse.
Choose TO EDUCATE if it aims to inform, TO ENTERTAIN if it makes you
laugh, and TO PERSUADE if it convinces you to believe and take an action.
NOTE: To make it more interesting the teacher will make this activity interactive
thru the use of ICT.

Choose 2 images from the painting exhibit used in the review of the lesson. Then
fill out the chart below.
Move around the classroom and pick two images that are either real or make-
believe. Show them to the class and tell what their purpose are and the reason
why you thought so.

Generalization:
Form three groups. Each group will unscramble the words contained in the
envelop to form sentences that tell about the three purposes of real and make-
believe images.
Real and make-believe images can educate, entertain and persuade.
IMAGES THAT EDUCATE help the viewer understand something better. For
example, a photo of historical figure at an important time in history might
educate the viewer.
IMAGES THAT ENTERTAIN are entertaining to the viewers. They may show
funny things and funny situations or celebrities having fun.
