NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SMARTPHONES ON SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT OF


GRADES OF 7 TO 10TH GRADE STUDENTS IN BENHS

In this world where we live in, modernized innovations and technologies are now considered
necessities for every people on their everyday living. We can say that people can no longer live without
technology as we already depend our daily lives and livelihoods with it. As much as people needed
technology in order to live in this modern world, it gradually invades and consumes everyone's attention
and time that instead of being a help provider, it becomes a distraction especially to adolescents and
students.

The purpose of this research is to review relevant literature on smartphone usages among students
and identify the negative effect of smartphone on students. Therefore, this study is crucial in providing
the outcome of smartphone use is negatively effecting student’s ability or performance at school. This
information is important for researchers to conduct further studies in this field and for the teens to
understand how smartphones affect their lives as a student and maybe even help them realize that they
can perform better at class if they just focus on studying and remove all distractions and limit their use
of smartphones.

Our group performed a preliminary survey to the students of BENHS regarding our title to obtain enough
background information and the results are shown in the table below.

Our group performed a preliminary survey to 7 to 10th grade students in BENHS and ask which of them
uses a smartphone with more than 3 hours of screen time and which of them bring it to school. First is
in Grade-7 Bonifacio, 28 students uses a smartphone < 3 hours a day and 14 of them bring their Phones
at school, in 7-Rizal there are 24 students that uses smartphone with screen time of more than 3 hours
and 12 students that bring their phones at school. Next, Grade-8 Narra have 27 students that uses a
phone < 3 hours a day, 19 bring their Phones in school, while there are 24 students in Grade-8 Acacia
that uses a phone with a screen time more than 3 hours and also 19 students that bring their
smartphones in school. Then in Grade-9 Rosal there are 21 students that uses a smartphone < 3 hours a
day, 7 of them bring their smartphones at school and in 9-Sampaguita 26 students uses their phones < 3
hours a day while 9 of them brings it to school. Then there’s 38 students in Grade-10 Magalang that
have more than 3 hours of screen time with their smartphones and 33 of them brings their phone in the
school. Finally, we have 34 students in Grade-10 Disiplinado that uses a smartphone with more than 3
hours of screen time and 17 students in that class that bring their phone at school. In total there are 222
students that uses a smartphone with more than 3 hours of screen time and 130 students that bring
their smartphones at school.
