SPEAKING! Ma’am!
Abstraction The teacher asks the class to share the main points of
the discussion and consolidates the learners’
responses.
(What is an issue?)
 An issue is an important topic or problem
for debate or discussion.
(Why is it important to determine an issue in a text?)
 Determining the issue from a material and
what created it is important in coming up
with appropriate solutions.
 It helps one better understand the content
and message of the text.
 The whole world is facing different problems
at present. Being able to know all these at a
very young age will enable you to view life
seriously so that you will be a part in
solving these problems soon.
Application The teacher presents and leads the class to read the
poem, “Africa’s Plea.” In understanding the poem
better, the teacher will assign four groups for the
following tasks:

Lesson Plan in English 8 2

Group 1 – Create a slogan about the Poem.
Group 2 - Dramatize the Poem
Group 3 – Draw Symbolism about the poem.
Group 4 - Paint the Poem
She gives the following directions:
 Think of the issue presented in the poem.
 Portray this issue in your assigned output
alongside a solution.
 Be guided by the given rubric.
(Refer to attached rubric.).
IV. Evaluation The teacher presents an excerpt of Nelson Mandela’s
speech and asks the learners to answer a set of
questions.
Directions: Read the following excerpt carefully and
(with a partner) answer the questions that follow.

“The complaint of Africans, however, is not only

that they are poor, and the whites are rich, but that
the laws which are made by the whites are designed
to preserve this situation. Pass laws, which to the
Africans are among the most hated bits of legislation
in South Africa, render any African liable to police
surveillance at any time. I doubt whether there is a
single African male in South Africa who has not at
some stage had a brush with the police over his
pass. Hundreds and thousands of Africans are
thrown into jail each year under pass laws. Even
worse than this is the fact that passes laws keep
husband and wife apart and lead to the breakdown
of family life.” This leads to a breakdown in moral
standards, to an alarming rise in illegitimacy, and to
growing violence which erupts not only politically,
but everywhere. Life in the townships is dangerous.’

2. What “situation” between the Africans and the
whites is pointed out by the speaker?
3. What issue is presented in the text?
4. What is the stand of the speaker regarding the
issue?
5. In your opinion, how may this issue be resolved?
V. Assignment Research on existing issues in our country. Reflect
and express your thoughts on your chosen issue
whether you are for or against it. Explain why you
are taking such stance.
